2b/2a. Expected level for end of year 3 is around a 3c

Expected level for the end of year 2 is 2b. Expected level for end of year 3 is 2a/ 3c.

Expected progress is either 1 or 2 sub-levels within the year. Even if the child makes 2 sublevels' progress throughout the year, there will be a term where no official progress is made.

As lots of Year 2 teachers mark up and year 3 is a big transition, I wouldn't be overly concerned by no progress in levels (on paper) by Christmas.

My DS is in yr4 now but only made 1 sub level in yr3 (in writing) and this was done from April to the end of the year.

In all other areas he made 2 sub levels by the end of the year.

Don't worry too much about levels, as they are on the way out. And only the current Y5 and Y6 pupils will leave primary school with a level. The vast majority of school are now teaching Y3 and Y4 the content from the New Curriculum. The standards and expectation are a lot higher.

Penny The expectation may be higher, but the children haven't changed. No teacher worth their salt would not teach higher level stuff to a child capable of it. All the new 'expectations' will show is that fewer children are meeting expected targets, but only because the goalpost has moved

Agree with juniper DS is in yr4 and being taught the "new"curriculum (but not sure he is noticing a difference, think he won't till yr6) and he will leave yr6 with a level (NC wise) as most schools seem to be keeping them.

Some elements of the old curriculum have gone, with a greater shift to basic skills. Schools will change as they did when the Literacy Strategy was first introduced. It has already happened in EYFS and children are graded as emerging, expected and exceeding. We haven't been told as yet quite how attainment will be reported, but have been repeatedly told that levels are going for over 18months now.
