I know latin helped me with vocabulary and grammar in English and I think ds would enjoy it, and it'd give his literacy a boost. Ds is 8yo so it's not early as plenty of prep schools start latin at this age. Needless to say ds is at state primary.

Has anyone else done this? Any recommendations for resources?

There are free and paid for resources for the Cambridge Latin Course including for independent learning/home schooling; Minimus is more targeted for 8yo but I think only has resources for classroom teaching.

I've been teaching DS(9). We've been using my OU books, which you can get from Amazon, ( book 1 book 2 and study guide ) but tbh that was because DS asked to learn whilst watching me studying it last year, so I already had the books, I'm quite interested to see if anyone has found some better resources.

The Iris Project might assist with some materials.

Th Cambridge course might be a bit, ummm, 'earthy' for an 8 yo!

Minimums is your best bet for an 8 yo, then move to CLC at the right point when he reaches 11 or so.

Your Ds is lucky to have you OP.

I agree it's a brilliant way to help with English (and French if he does that as well.)

Having gone up to O'Level myself decades ago I recently spent a few months helping Dc make a start in preparation for a new school. I followed recommendations here and elsewhere and bought CLC - and was not very pleased with it.

Luckily the new school used:

"Latin Prep Bk 1- So You Really Want To Learn Latin"

so we switched the preparation to that.

I can thoroughly recommend it. It's far more rigorous and well set out as regards grammar and vocab. There's also a wonderfully old fashioned Latin reading (aloud) CD that accompanies the book.

Another resource you might find helpful is the OU Intro to Latin which you can easily access for free online.
