Hi,
I am currently in the process of appealing for a school locally. I have the form to hand but am confused as to how much detail I need to write when it says state reasons. are these bullet points? or does it need to be an essay really don't want to get it wrong and ruin any chance we might have thanks in advance

It is entirely up to you. Some people just write a few bullet points, others write an essay. Neither approach will ruin your chances.

I usually advise people to submit an outline of their case at this stage and say you will submit a full case nearer the hearing. That gives you time to gather information that you may want to include in your case. It also gives you time to take advice and make sure your case concentrates on the strongest arguments.

I would recommend putting your case, without identifying details, on here to get feedback. There are experienced posters here who can tell you what are the strongest points of your case, and lots of other practical advice.

I would always try and bullet point the answer as it makes you think about the real reasons for the appeal and putting them down in a succinct way.

I appealed and did both. Very short bullets at the top and then a paragraph about each underneath. The bullets ensure you can succinctly make you key point and the detail below. Good luck.

Thanks so much for your replies, I am just trying to gauge things as the head has already told me he will be speaking with our current head to write their response so I don't want to give oodles of detail incase they come up with lots of counter arguments if that makes sense?
Is there a legal amount of detail needed I.e. If I did bullet points can I send a more detailed statement nearer the appeal, date along with supplementary documentation?

Thanks prh for this- this is what I was hoping to hear in that it is acceptable to submit at a later date. Another thing I wanted to raise is that are the bullet points the reasons for the new school and is it not acceptable to state the difficulties with current school on the form I'm sure I read somewhere that talking about current school is generally not encouraged?

You are appealing for this school, not against the current school. However, it sounds like we are dealing with a transfer here and that shifts the goalposts a bit. Difficulties with the current school may be relevant. If your child is being bullied and the school's response is inadequate that is something you should raise. At the other extreme, if you simply don't get on with the head you definitely shouldn't say anything. If you would like to give more details I'll let you know what I think. Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post information publicly.
