Viable alternative to school?

My dd is in year one and struggling. She has slowly gone down to the bottom groups for english and maths, this is despite us helping her at home every day. In fairness, the school seems to be very acedemic with lots more homework given than other schools nearby. However, I'm now wondering if this type of learning environment is suitable for my dd. she is quite creative and seems a more visual learner. Her teacher currently gives out lots of worksheet based work. I help in the class and even though they are only 5 and 6, they don't seem to play and don't have any role play activities. In fact they are told to read a book when they have finished early.

I guess I'm worried she will switch off soon. She has gone from enjoying school ( rec) to hating Mondays as they are boring. ( her words)
What can I do? Should I look into different schools? We can't really afford private.

I would definitely look at other schools. Not all schools are like this. Continual worksheets at year 1 are thoroughly bad practice.

A lot of schools do a lot more fun ways of learning in year 1 and the amount of work you've described does sound a bit much for a 5/6 year old so I would call round the other schools in your area and see if anyone has spaces for her year.

Maybe just that teacher is rubbish. What do the other Y1 teachers do?

Just because you get a worksheet that doesn't mean you have to do it. We got one the other day, took one look at it just to check it was all already covered elsewhere and then threw it away.
