What is that reading difficulty rule (year 1 question)?

Something like if they struggle with every 10th word, then the reading level is about right, but if they struggle every 3rd word then it's too hard, every 25th word then not hard enough?

Anyone know what I'm talking about & what the rule of thumb is? I keep finding DS's books way too hard for him (I think, but trying to get 3rd opinion before I approach teacher).

We don't teach guessing, cg, we teach accurate word identification. So much less frustrating when it comes to reading and understanding text.

Because decoding a word isn't the only way of recognising it.

It is when it's the first time you have encountered it. Or does the word leap off the page shouting 'I say grass'?

I would suggest to children to look for the first letter and see if the following letters could make the /ai/ sound. This advice was if a child was struggling with ay. So the child may see he - and conclude that it isn't hay. Then naught see hay and initially sound h-a-y - opening a discussion into other sounds the ay letters make. Children often 'know' sounds before they can use them accurately in their reading so sometimes this has to be looked at.
