Dgs is 7 and just on 'free readers' at school. He has read some Horrid Henry and all the Mr Majeica books at home as well as lots of non fiction. He loves the 'How to Train your Dragon' cartoons and enjoys Science and Geography. Can anyone recommend any books at a suitable level that he might enjoy reading himself?

Roald dahl. My 6 year old laughs out loud at them!

thegreylady · 09/01/2014 19:09

No sorry he wouldn't like the girl focused stories at all :( It would be ok if one of them was a boy.

George's Marvellous Medicine
The Twits
Mr Gum series
Astrosaurs
Horrid Henry series

My DS enjoyed all of these when he was younger.

littleredsquirrel · 09/01/2014 19:11

dinosaur cove, astrosaurs, Oliver Moon, Jack Stalwart.

Enid Blyton - Famous Five, the Adventure series, The Mystery of.... the list goes on. My four DC all found at least one Enid Blyton series to enjoy.

Magic Faraway Tree/Enchanted Wood/Wishing Chair - Enid Blyton
Dick King Smith - I am a big Dick King Smith fan - I always loved his books.
Roald Dahl - most kids like some of them at least.
Charlotte's Web?

Magic Treehouse Series
Enid Blyton
Usborne Young Readers Series 3

Check your local library, I found it is cheaper as DD's taste is not necessarily mine.

simpson · 09/01/2014 20:14

Another one for Dick King Smith.

Also Michael Morepurgo (but the younger books). I think DD liked one called Snakes and Ladders and another called Conker.

Frog and Toad.

The Seriously Silly Stories (Little Red Riding Wolf etc).

simpson · 09/01/2014 20:18

Forgot to add Beast Quest. There are hundreds of the bloody books!

lookdeepintotheparka · 09/01/2014 20:22

Oliver Moon - definitely second trying this series as they are well written and funny!

Winnie the Witch chapter books also funny and (mostly) good stories

My DS likes the Star Wars clone wars comic books which are classed as Brown (free readers) at our school.

I'm not a huge fan personally but Dirty Bertie books went down well with DS too! There are chapter books which again are good first reading alone books.

My year 1 Ds is at similar level. He is scared of me Majeika!

Other boy friendly books
Anything by Jeremy strong thy are v funny
Me gun series
Super soccer boy by judy Anderson (v cheap at the moment at the book people)
Sally Gardner magical boy series eg boy with the lightening feet
Dick king smith
Roald dahl books are a must! The twits is a good one to start with

Most of all my Ds loves non fiction: usborne children's encyclopedia, space books, football facts books, science books etc

staverton · 09/01/2014 20:28

Oops sorry about all the typos

Rooble · 09/01/2014 20:31

The Spy Dogs books are really good (think they're by Andy Stanton?)

freetrait · 09/01/2014 21:36

DS read loads of Horrid Henrys, lots of Jeremy Strong- really good for this age group if a bit rude! Heard DS giggling in his room reading them to himself. He is now addicted to Horrible Histories and Horrible Science. Usborne have a wide range of excellent books, both fiction and non-fiction. Try Series Two Young Reading eg www.usborne.com/catalogue/young-reading-series-page-2.aspx?cat=1&area=YR&subcat=YRS2

some really rich stuff.

Ladybirds are also excellent. This is a good standard, and DD enjoyed listening to it:
www.amazon.co.uk/Ladybird-Classics-Peter-Pan/dp/1409312224/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1389303337&sr=8-1&keywords=peter+pan+ladybird+classic

littleredsquirrel · 09/01/2014 22:46

DS2 is six and loved the butterfly lion (Michael morpurgo)

thegreylady · 10/01/2014 08:34
