No progress from Feb to December? Should I be worried?

Just got DS1's latest SATs results from December testing.

1 sub-level progress in reading (5b) and maths (5c), but none in writing (4b). That means he's made no progress since Feb 13. He went from 2a at the end of Y2 to 3a at the end of Y3, stayed the same in Nov Y4 then up to 4b in Feb of Y4 with no change since. Would you be worried?

Comment from teacher in link book was - on cusp of 4a but needs to use a wider variety of sentence structures independently.

Any thoughts? Should I be worried? What can I do to help him? He's an avid reader so no problems there :)

Is he in Y5? As you know, 'expected progress' across KS2 is 2 whole levels so from a 2a at the end of KS1, he'll be expected to be at least 4a by the end of Y6. Given that he made a whole sub level of progress in Y3, a bit of plateauing and consolidating sounds about right.

You know that he's doing very well, so I don't expect there's any reason for you to be worried.

Yes sorry, Y5 now. Thanks :)

Can anyone recommend parent friendly books for me to look at? I think my sentences are probably the same as his as I've never properly understood punctuation!

You also have to remember that writing assessments are much more subjective than any other subject-one teacher's idea of, for example, how much variety is required in sentence structure might be different to another teacher's-how varied does it have to be?, how much evidence of deliberate word choices would be needed, how relevant do ideas need to be etc, ( I am assuming your DS has changed teacher in between?)
Sub levels are pretty arbitrary, when schools are moderated for writing, the moderator simply looks at whole level assessments rather than sublevels. We spend literally hours arguing over the finer points of assessment foci when internally moderating!! A new teacher might be initially cautious, or simply stricter in marking assessment!
