Well, every child will be tutored, even the ones at pre preps. Even the ones whose parents tell you they don't believe in tutors and are just doing a few past papers at home. Especially those ones in fact!

Don't know much detail but I think it's writing a story, maths and some sort of reasoning.

I do not know a lot about the Hampstead 7+ exam. However the requirements vary slightly from schools. Some schools will include verbal and non verbal reasoning and others will stick to just English and Maths. The English paper usually consists of comprehension and story-writing. Spelling and reading are also assessed. In most cases, they expect candidates to be at level 3 in both English and Maths. The maths paper basically covers all topics on the key stage 1 curriculum. They also have questions on problem solving. It is always beneficial in my opinion if the candidate is familiar with the times table, understand division as inverse multiplication, basic addition and subtraction.
I hope this helps.

Some schools give details of what they are looking for on their website. Highgate changed the criteria recently and have example papers on their website to download. Not all pre preps tutor and Andrea at HHS would have your guts for garters if she found out you were tutoring your child if they were at her school. HHS place children in year 1 into year 2 classes from April and not Sept. This gives them a head start at prepping them for the 7+.

Yes but if a child is at HHS they are effectively being tutored all the time that are at school, as it focuses completely on preparation for the 7+.

Tableforfour - I think that is a very good point. I don't understand how prep schools can have the cheek to say they don't want applicants to be tutored and then take a third of their boys from Wetherby (not to knock W, which seems excellent)
