Hello, looking for a very gentle book for my just 9 year old daughter about puberty. Just want her to know what will happen to her (as it's starting Sad but don't want any info really about sex as yet!
Anyone know of a good book?
Thanks in advance!

Hair in funny places was recommended to me a few years ago.

My dd just turned 10 and we recently looked at the Usborne 'what's happening to me' book together. It does discuss puberty and reproduction though.

SavoyCabbage · 22/12/2013 23:20

I have the same one as Gampy. I liked it as it is not too much information. But enough. My dd didn't know a thing and she took it all in her stride.

NoComet · 22/12/2013 23:25

No sex, I thought all nine year olds knew about sex.

Although DD1 says her CofE, school managed to tell them all about purity without mentioning sex or it getting the body ready to make babies. She did think it was a bit pointless.

DD2's class never had sex education, probably just as well it would have been a riot (innocent they were not)

Usborne do growing up books of various levels, but you need to check. DD1's is a bit explicit even for a 9 year old who knows the basics, but there are ones aimed younger.

puberty not purity

GampyWabbit · 23/12/2013 08:10

Yes I agree, it is a bit difficult to discuss puberty without explaining about sex and reproduction too. When I read the book with my dd she took it all in her stride. I found it was really easy to talk about everything covered in the book and then left the book with her to read on her own.

My 3(10,10 and 9)have the Usborne books. They're pretty comprehensive.

I think the American Girl, Care and Keeping of You book for younger girls is spot on. It discusses body changes without getting into sex ed. I bought it for my 9 year old and she was satisfied. As they get older you can buy the second book for older girls.

Here is a link to it on Amazon.

My dd just turned 10, and I gave her The Smart Girl's Guide to Growing Up a few months ago (she was starting to develop very fast). She wasn't shocked, liked it, and uses it as a basis for discussions about bodies and changing with me, and with her best friends.

titchy · 24/12/2013 16:18

Why no info about sex? Better she finds out the facts rather than the garbled idea she'd probably already got from the playground?

Bit hard to tell a child about puberty without using the words babies and growing up I'd have thought!

MirandaWest · 24/12/2013 16:19

How would you explain puberty without explaining reproduction?

HerrenaHarridan · 24/12/2013 16:39

We have "hair in funny places" in my 2yos book basket.

9 is plenty old enough to know that puberty is about preparing your body for reproduction.

I recommend David Attenboroughs "life on earth" as a way of opening discussion about 'puberty' throughout the plant and animal kingdom

servingwench · 24/12/2013 19:06

Hi, thanks for ideas, I have ordered one advised. I just want her to know what to expect and will tell her why if she asks but she really isn't ready to know about sex yet...she is very unknowing and is not at all curious. I feel I need to drip feed her info as she is changing but at her pace Grin

Hair in Funny Places was right level for my 7-10yos.

Lonecatwithkitten · 24/12/2013 23:24

My DD also really like The Smart Girl's Guide to Growing Up. I really liked it and felt I also dealt with worst case scenarios like flooding periods really well.

NoComet · 25/12/2013 01:28

Hmm more likely OP she already think a she knows it all and knows mummy first like talking about such things.

I can't imagine any modern 9y not knowing a fair bit about sex.

but then I knew the facts of life from 2 or 3, my favourite word was why!

NoComet · 25/12/2013 01:29

doesn't like

MerlinFromCamelot · 26/12/2013 09:06

Agree, think it is hard to explain puberty without explaining reproduction. Better from you than in the playground. I liked "Where Willy Went". Simply but sweet.
