NC Levels starting in Reception

DD is in Reception and there are some very bright pupils in her class. The teacher has started KS1 work with most of the class already and some of them are racing towards L2 work next term.

How common is this? DD has always enjoyed Maths concepts in particular, but I thought KS1 work usually started in Y1 so interested to hear how I can extend her when she's so little!

How do you know what levels the teacher is working on which certain children? And if the teacher is forthcoming with that type of information then perhaps she's also the best person to ask about extra maths for the home.

Very unusual for most of a reception class to be doing KS1 work

I think there is an overlap between the two.

IIRC numeracy level 1 was working with numbers to 10 but EYFS targets are to 20.

When DD was in reception last year there were 3 kids out of 90 who were on NC Levels (in literacy) and 6 in reading. Don't know about numeracy.

The reason I know this is that they did extension work in these groups and DD told me it was because "they had finished reception work" Obviously, I don't know what the actual levels were (apart from DD).

Yes, how would you know? I would just relax and let her enjoy it all- if she's doing that well at school I don't think you have to worry with 'extra' at home.

When DS was in YR they had a group of pretty bright children but they did not mark them using NC levels. In Y1 they were all L2 at least at the end of the 1st term (I didn't know each child's specific level but the teacher said this group were all at least L2) so presumably they had been doing some KS1 work in YR but it was never discussed and never levelled other than using the top EYFS level.

It didn't cross my mind to worry about stretching DS in YR as its supposed to be learning through play, I let him read whatever he wanted but that was it. Once he was in Y1 and it was more structured I became more aware of what he was able to do and maybe worried about it more then.
