we all enjoyed wonderful nativity play our little year 1's and 2's put on for us parents, they all looked fantastic, they sang their little hearts out and at the end they sang "we wish you a merry Christmas" adding a line in a different language representing each child's nationality, 1 parent got up and complained to the head teacher at how disgusted he was that his Latvian child had to sing in Polish!!!!... in full hearing range of other parents and the children in the nativity, I don't get it, I really don't. is there some sort of feud between these 2 nationalities? really spoilt what was a lovely occasion :(

Were there lots of Latvian children? (Only wondering why the Latvian child didn't sing in Latvian)

LittleMissGreen · 18/12/2013 13:04

Ooops do you mean all children sang all lines in all languages in which case, how odd!

typoqueen · 18/12/2013 13:08

lol, yes they all sang all the lines in each language and it was lovely, my dd had been practicing it for weeks :) x

If they were supposed to sing a line in the language that represented their own nationality I can see why he was fed up that she was singing in Polish, as she's not Polish so it wasn't representing her nationality and the two languages aren't related.

It would have been better for him to mention it discreetly to a teacher so that they're aware next time. But maybe he's had a lot of prejudice to deal with before and this was the proverbial straw… If they weren't supposed to sing in their own language, but just each singing a different language, perhaps he didn't realise that they weren't all singing their own languages? Shame though, sorry it spoilt how you felt about it. What language was your DD singing?

nonicknameseemsavailable · 18/12/2013 13:40

that is ridiculous.

Perhaps he didn't hear the line in Latvian? or perhaps the school got the pronunciation wrong so he didn't realise it was?

I certainly wasn't aware of a feud between Latvia and Poland and even if there was it is a children's performance so should be irrelevant.

strruglingoldteach · 18/12/2013 13:45

Did they get the language wrong so that the Polish line appeared instead of the Latvian one?

If both languages were included correctly then I don't see any reason to complain. Confused

Actually, as I understand it, Poland and Latvia are the best of friends so I think it may be more to do with the parent than any problem between the countries. Perhaps he has a personal problem with Polish? He definitely should not have complained so others could hear.
