Understanding place value/partitioning numbers in year1: what's expected?

It's been a while since DD2 was in year 1 and yes, I could google but life's to short to stuff a mushroom or trawl through the National Curriculum. What kind of numbers are they dealing with? I have been told (by her teacher) that she's working within the top group so will that mean 2 digit numbers? 3? Bigger? Thanks.

Depends on the group's ability I guess. DD's teacher got excited last year (y1) when DD was doing place value and partitioning with thousands. I dont think it's THAT unusual from reading these boards so I'd guess your DD is working with hundreds or thousands.

I don't think most children in year 1 are working with hundreds and thousands. DS1 is the only one I his year (year1) that recognises 3 digit numbers and understands place value to thousands but he is working with year2.
Mostly year 1 is recognising numbers to 100, number bonds to 10 and 20 and addition/subtraction with numbers 0-20. Some might be beginning to add single to double digit numbers and understand place value of tens and units.
