Anyone knows which primary school have January intakes?

Hi, first time here. My daughter is four years old now but was born in October and was not able to go to reception in primary school last September. I heard there could be January intakes in some primary schools. Anyone knows such information? Thanks a lot!

The January intake is generally for children who are almost a year older than your daughter, so for children who will turn five in spring or summer 2014. None of the schools where I live do this any more as children are now expected to learn quote a lot in reception.

What area are you in?

MirandaWest · 12/12/2013 10:54

If she was born in 2009 then she will start school when she is nearly 5 ie September 2014. If you are looking for a place at a state school you need to apply by 15th January 2014. January intake for January 2014 is for children born between September 2008 and August 2009.

Not sure how it works in Wales (I know Scotland is different) so my advice is for schools in England.

mstangju · 12/12/2013 10:55

thanks for the reply. My daughter likes to play with bigger kids and right now she is the oldest one in her nursery. Sometimes, she gets bored. Plus, the nursery is very expensive. A reception is free, right?

I live in Westminster Council, near Covent Garden. Acutually, I'm a student right now at LSE. Any recommendations for primary school application? I just want her to be happy and in a friendly environment.

I'm afraid you can't just send your daughter to school until she is the "right" age ie next September.

You should get 15 hours free hours for her at nursery as she is older than 3 (starts the term after they are 3).

Agree with PP you need to apply for a Reception place before January 15th 2014 for entry into Reception in September 2014. She will not be allowed to start before then as she is too young and has not reached school age.

The age at which she reaches 'statutory school age' and must be receiving education is the term after her 5th birthday which will be January 2015. However she is entitled to a Reception place from the September after her 4th birthday which will be September 2014.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/12/2013 11:12

I agree with the others January entry, where schools still have them, tend to be for the younger children in the year who could have started the previous September but who's parents think they are not yet ready. Your DD will start next september in reception. I think she will probably find it an advantage rather than a disadvantage to be older in the year :)

You are right that reception is free in a state school. Nursery is expensive though but I guess you need more childcare than a preschool (which you still pay for but which is cheaper) can provide if you're a student.

As to which schools are good I'd start another thread with your area in the title asking people who live nearby for advice.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 12/12/2013 11:13

whose not who's sorry.

ClayDavis · 12/12/2013 11:24

I'm not sure that many, if any schools do still have January entry. The Rose Review and subsequent changes to the Admissions Code have made it fairly redundant.

3asAbird · 12/12/2013 11:33

dd2 mised school last year by 16days and is bit bored at preschool/nursey.

you need to get schools appliation in by jan 15th as she would be due to start by sept 2014 ypu cutting it fine to look round schools and get applications in so ring local schools now this week speak to admissions and get form in onlines best.

windsor and parts wales used to but dont think they do anymore.

Shame as be perfect idea for aut kids.

wish there was far more flexibility in school system.

hardly any schools here have nursery classes attached to primary-could that be an option op?

3bunnies · 12/12/2013 11:50

ds just missed out and I agree that he could have gone sooner. You should be able to claim some of the free hours through the nursery, so check that is happening and apply now for next September's intake. When our school did a Jan intake it was for those born April- August, but still of reception age. You can still as an individual parent request it, although obviously not relevant to your situation. I am using the extra year to concentrate on making ds ready for school - getting himself dressed, reading, writing etc.

mstangju · 12/12/2013 12:33

wow, these information are so helpful. Mumsnet is great! Thank you all so much! Sorry, what does DD mean? fist time here, trying to learn the language...

Darling daughter Smile. It really just means daughter, but we use DD because two letter abbreviations are easier to pick out/understand/not confuse with other abbreviations.

Agree with others, she can't start school until September. And you need to apply by 15 January (I think that date is now standard, but check your area). Those places with January starts are for the children who have delayed starting in September, not to start others early I'm afraid.

prh47bridge · 12/12/2013 12:54

DD = Dear Daughter

As others have said you cannot get your daughter into this year's Reception. She is too young. All schools have a January intake but that is for children who were 4 in September and where the parent decided to defer entry.

You need to apply by 15th January for a Reception place for your daughter starting in September. You are entitled to defer entry until January 2015 if you wish but you can't go the other way and get your daughter into school early.

I agree completely, tiggy.

However, I think you have misunderstood what mstangju was hoping to do, which is to get an earlier than usual school start for her daughter, this January when she will be 4years 2months old, rather than waiting until next September when she will be nearly five.
