If your Yr 1 DC gets spellings, how many do they get and does the amount ever change?

Just curious really.

DD gets spellings each week, once only 8, the most has been 12, with most numbers in-between. The amount of spellings has not been increasing incrementally - the amount is always a surprise. Spellings are structured phonically, but I can't think that's the reason for regularly having a different amount each week.

So if your DC gets spellings how many do they get and does anyone also get a different amount each week or the same, or maybe an increasing amount (which makes sense if they're doing well or moving up groups for example)?

10 a week here. about half are common usage words I think and the rest whatever the current phonic sound is so seems logical.

columngollum · 11/12/2013 14:00

We had a few HFWs months ago, but nothing since.

Fuzzymum1 · 11/12/2013 14:10

We had eight words a week in year one, linked to what they were doing in phonics at the time. In Year two so far, they've been recapping the high frequency words.

6 a week. All the kids get 6 but there are 3 lists and some are easier lists than others ( according to ability).

picnicbasketcase · 11/12/2013 16:57

DD gets 8 a week.

SockPinchingMonster · 11/12/2013 17:12

My yr1 twins get 5 spellings a week - all the kids in their class get the same number although I think they get different lists to learn depending upon how well they can read.

tiredbutnotweary · 11/12/2013 21:36

Interesting!

So a different number of words depending on the school but always the same number of spellings a week for everyone that's posted so far (thank you)..

Is there anyone out there whose DC has had variable amounts of words to learn? Do any teachers do this? Anyone tempted to speculate? It just seems so random but surely it can't be???

We get spellings every week

10 which tend to be project words - fire/burn/crackling when studying fire of london, this week stir/granny - for stir up sunday? etc

simpson · 11/12/2013 21:40

When DS (now yr4) was in yr2 he got 10 words a week, some kids got 8 and some got 6. A few of the words were the same with the higher group having a few tougher ones added in.

ZombiePenguin · 11/12/2013 21:45

They have technically four. What they do is learn the words on Monday. Then they get a test on Wednesday. Depending on how many hey pass (they write them in sentence structures, so this means getting verbs right in all situations etc;) they get give maximum of four more (so if they get three of the spellings right, they have to learn three new words and the word they got wrong).

On Monday, they are tested on the 4-8 words. There are different tiers of words, so a lot of kids are on different words as it is rotating, so gives you time to be helped and means that your ability is suited to the words.

Dd got 10 a week in year 1, 15 a week in year 2 and is now in year 3 getting 20 a week. I'm hoping its not going up by 5 a week every year or she'll be having 35 a week in year 6

PeppermintCreams · 12/12/2013 18:26

DS gets 10. 7 are linked to the phonic sounds of the week, and 3 are HFW.

tiredbutnotweary · 12/12/2013 21:17

Thanks everyone - still no one that gets a random(ish) amount then ... I'm not sure I can bring myself to ask the teacher but the more people saying it's the same number each week for their DC the more curious I'm becoming!

thefuture - oh yes, I'd be hoping that too ... 35 a week, yikes! Mind you on another thread here someone's 5 yr old reception DC is getting 24 a week already Shock

DS1 is Y3 and gets 10 a week (the actuals vary depending on what group the children are in but always only 10), next year they get 10 if in the lowest group, 20 in the middle and all 30 if in the top group.

DS2 is Y1 and gets 8 a week, at the moment they have all been the same sound but with usually 1 or 2 odd ones in there that don't quite match the rules.

Wigeon · 12/12/2013 21:57

DD in Y1 gets around 6 a week (can't actually remember if it's exactly 6 each week!). I'm really not sure if they have a spelling test - DD only mentioned once that the teacher said they were going to have one after half-term, but she didn't seem to (although DD is not always the most reliable at accurately reporting everything which went on at school each day!)

I don't think it's that odd to have a varying number a week. Well, 2 one week and 36 the next might be odd, but 8 one week and 12 the next doesn't sound too odd. Maybe the 12 included more easy words, and the 8 were all more difficult? Or something?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 12/12/2013 22:02

Yr 1 and 9 words per week. 3 with the sound of the week (ear for this week), 3 HFW and 3 topic words. Tested on Fridays.

There are different groups for spelling but they all get 9 and all follow the above structure, just vary in difficulty.

DeckTheHallsWithBoughsOfHorry · 12/12/2013 22:03

None.

Shamoy · 12/12/2013 22:13

6 every week, spelling test every Monday. The more able kids get an extra 3

sheeplikessleep · 12/12/2013 22:15

8 a week here

Wednesbury · 12/12/2013 22:20

DS is year 1 and he gets 12 a week and a test each Friday. Other children get 10 a week, others get 6. I think it depends on the level of ability of the child and from what I can see the words are different too, eg the week DS had 'alphabet' and 'elephant' in his list I saw another child who had 'pig' as one of his. Maybe there's a wide range of abilities in the group. Seems sensible to me.

HowBadCanThisGet · 12/12/2013 22:25

5 - there are at least two lists (harder and easier), but always 5
