Year 2 dd proudly announced that she was one of only a few who had done a level 3 reading paper the other day. I felt slightly smug until she told me she got a mark of 12 which I assume means she didn't get a level 3. I don't know whether to worry or not or if i should be doing more to help her at home (currently very little).

About 25% of children nationally get Level 3 in reading at the end of Y2.

That's the end of Y2, not in December. If her teacher is happy for her to even see a Level 3 paper now, it sounds like she is doing very well. Also remember that the end of year results will be based on teacher asssessment - the test is only used to inform this.

I wouldn't worry if I were you. DD has done a few practice level 3 tasks from old papers too. I don't think she did especially well at them, but then she has never really sat any kind of exam or formal test before. It's all good practice. I know that her teacher considers her to be working very comfortably within level 3 because she told me so. As redsky said, I imagine it is a compliment to your daughter that the teacher thought she might be ready to try a paper.

Sorry, that should say that my DD is also in Y2.

agree with redsky & Huitre

It sounds like the teacher has identified that your DD will sit for L3 at KS1 SATs and is starting to prepare her for that.

Be proud! Really.

DD1 scored NC L1 at KS1 SATs - so I can assure you if she's attempting NC L3 work in December of Y2 - that's jolly good and worth being thrilled about!
