How is "pull" a phase 2 word?

We have the Jelly and Bean phonic book set, which consistently lists "pull" as a Phase 2 word.

In my world "u" is pronounced as per the start of "umbrella" and "up".

But that pronunciation means that "pull" doesn't come out correctly when sounded out.

I get that different areas areas have different accents (I'm in South London). Is it an accent issue? Is there a part of the country where "pull" can be sounded out using Phase 2 sounds?

Rani, I do get that words sound different in different accents, see my coke example above, but I cannot for the life of me think how you could say pull where it wouldn't rhyme with bull and cull! Would it be more like pool or pall? (I'm sat here saying it out loud Grin)

Happy, pull and bull would still rhyme but cull would sound very different. Can you not hear it in your head of you imagine someone with quite a posh RP accent saying it? If you imagine it as sex noises, pull would be more of a soft "ooohhhhh" whereas cull would be "ugh". It doesn't work quote line, but you probably don't have that sound in the range of sounds you normally day and that's the closest I can get without scouring youtube for different people saying cull.

Lol Happy, I'm now saying 'cull' over and over in an attempt to make it rhyme with pull! When you say 'cup', is that the same 'u' as in push and pull?

It helps to note the position of your tongue when you say the word Wink

You lot remind me of my attempt to buy butter in an old fashioned (counter service) grocers's shop in Sheffield many years ago. As I had only just moved to The North from Essex I didn't understand the shop assistant's clearly implied view that I was bonkers. It wasn''t until I explained that I wanted the stuff you spread on bread that she realised that I didn't want the stuff you fry fish in...

Which accent is it that says cull differently?

strruglingoldteach · 30/11/2013 12:46

Panzee it's a south-eastern accent. I'm from the London/Essex border area and everyone around here would say 'cull' and 'pull' differently.

Panzee · 30/11/2013 13:11

Oh so my Essex friend can help! I shall call her later. :)

Now I really am chuckling! I was watching This morning and it was about culling badgers so I was really listening to the 'posh' woman saying cull. It sounds very slightly different to how I would say it - more like it rhymes with pal I think. I would probably starve to death if I went to live in the South East wouldn't I? Grin
