Hi just wondered what you are buying your dc's teachers for Xmas? As there are a few different teachers I need to get for I was thinking of maybe buying one of those personalised mugs you can get online saying 'Keep calm mrs xxxx and carry on teaching' and then filling it with Chocolates. Do you think it's a bit cheesy though? Looking for ideas so any suggestions welcome. Thanks!

Rockinhippy · 26/11/2013 21:39

Nothing

well as a teacher's daughter I used to really look forward to Christmas as I usually ended up with chocolates and bath stuff etc from her kind class. There was only so much she could use herself and she seemed to be a very popular teacher.

I am sending in a big tin of chocolates and toffees at the start of December for them to put in their office and share because there are loads of TAs, lunchtime staff, Special Needs etc as well as the teachers and I want to give them something they can all enjoy.

At preschool we used to put a lottery ticket/scratchcard thing in the cards which the staff seemed to enjoy just purely because it was different. They rarely won anything but they liked the fun side of it.

Huitre · 26/11/2013 21:40

I'm buying them some soft tissues and some pritt sticks. Not very personal but useful.

AngiBolen · 26/11/2013 21:43

I think the mug is a great idea.

I only do gifts if my DC want to give them. DD wants to give her teacher toffee.

I will be giving the staff in the school office chocolates, as I do each year, as they go above and beyond each and every day.

AngiBolen · 26/11/2013 21:44

I send in tissues anyway!

runningonwillpower · 26/11/2013 21:46

I'd suggest something consumable or quickly usable. Chocs, wine or notelets/pretty paper things. Plants or flowers would work.

Otherwise, the poor man or woman will end up with a house full of shit.

Rockinhippy · 26/11/2013 21:46

Forgot to say - mugs sounds like a lovely idea :)

Funkybutnot · 26/11/2013 21:50

Sounds lovely.

I always buy Cath kidston make up bags.

sleepyhorse · 26/11/2013 21:56

Thanks for all your suggestions. The more I think about it the mug thing could get expensive as I have several speech and lang staff on an ARP to buy for. Just wanted wanted to show my appreciation for all they have done for my ds. Might just pop to M&S and buy some boxes of choc biscuits.

Just dosn't really want to buy 7 different teachers the same present. Thanks again

If you have ever been in a staff room, you will notice that the cupboard is full of "world's best teacher" and similar mugs. As are the charity shops in January!

Wine or chocolate. Honestly. Something they can either use or recycle.

I always gave Oxfam school related presents - and a bunch of flowers on the first day of the new term if I was particularly impressed by a teacher. They really don't need any more stuff!

Romily · 26/11/2013 23:10

To the teachers that have really supported my daughter I would write a thank you letter and give it to them with a Costa voucher. I would imagine, as thoughtful as it is, that they get a lot of mugs.

Fuzzymum1 · 27/11/2013 10:13

I bake biscuits usually. I have bought a £1.50 storage jar from asda and will add some of DS's christmas drawings (transferred on water slide paper) to the jar and fill it with cookies. I did something similar last year and it was well received.

SparklyFucker · 27/11/2013 12:30

A bottle of their preferred colour of wine. Anything else isn't usually appreciated quite as much as the giver tends to think. Oh and a large box of bought biscuits for the staffroom, given around the second week of December.

Last year I made a small hamper of homemade food goodies for the teacher ds1 had had for two years, a) because she was really lovely, and b) because I had scoped her out throughout the year as to whether she approved in general of homemade food stuffs, and in particular in the types of sweets I was thinking of. I wouldn't done homemade food for anyone I wasn't certain would actually genuinely like it. Too risky.

Jinty64 · 27/11/2013 14:08

I normally give them an m&s voucher but this year ds3 has spotted a musical Christmas tree containing shortbread. I think it's a bit useless but it's his choice so that's what she's getting. Sweets for TA's and vouchers for music teachers I think!

HoratiaDrelincourt · 27/11/2013 14:37

Inspired by previous MN threads, a personalised stamp for use in reading books (little picture plus "Mr says well done!").

Previously have done small collection of home baking/confectionery, but this year have a newborn so am not committing to large batches of anything.

Frikadellen · 27/11/2013 14:49

Costa Coffee voucher for them they always comment on how nice it is

trinity0097 · 27/11/2013 19:48

Do check that the teacher drinks before buying them alcohol - it's my pet hate, as a tee-total teacher, to get bottles of wine and bubbly!

GW297 · 27/11/2013 19:55

A cinema voucher with popcorn and minstrels - night out on us!

dogwood · 27/11/2013 19:59

Book token with a handmade book mark from DS.

noitsachicken · 27/11/2013 20:02

My mum is a TA and gets tonnes of gifts every year.
What she likes best are things the children have made and cards/notes with a personal message that the child or parent has obviously taken time over.
