Improper fractions and mixed numbers resources

Can anyone recommend games, apps, videos or even worksheets covering converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and decimals?

DS has been doing this in school this week (Y5, currently working at level 5c according to teacher at parents' evening this month) and he's very upset because they are moving on to a new topic on Monday and he doesn't feel like he has a good understanding of it. He says the teacher gave his table a list of questions to do, some were improper fractions which needed converting to mixed numbers (which he says he is ok with) and some were doing the reverse, which he has struggled with. He says that he hasn't had any explicit teaching on this, as the teacher has been working with other children this week, so his table just had to get on with what they were given.

I realise this may not be entirely correct and he may just feel as though they were abandoned because he is stressed about it, but it has worried him enough for him to ask me to find some extra learning on it, so I need to do something.

Thanks

You tube has some very good tutorials on converting improper fractions into mixed numbers and vice versa, also maths worksheets has sheets with answers on everything to do fractions.

thank you, I have found some Khan Academy videos on this too, and he quite likes watching those, so hopefully we'll be able to sort him out over the weekend.

I just wrote out loads of examples on a sheet of paper and sat with DD supporting her while she worked through them, 30 minutes and she had it cracked. Similar age, working at a similar level.

I think sometimes that get a little panicky and overwhelmed I found I was just getting her to approach them methodically and calmly.

Yes, I've printed off some sheets to work through at the weekend, but he tends to take explanations better if they come from people who aren't me - we are both aware that he generally understands maths far better than I do! He'll probably be fine once he's done it a few times, I think he did just panic because he isn't used to finding maths hard. He never panics when he doesn't understand something grammar-related because he doesn't expect to get that straight away, so I think I need to help him understand that even being good at maths doesn't mean he'll always find all aspects of it easy straight away!

Mixed numbers to improper fractions are a simple process so if you have 5 and 1/4. You times 5 by 4 to get 20, the add to 1 so improper fraction is 21/4. Method is the same regardless of size of numbers. Like most maths it is about creating brain muscle memory for that particular type of sum by practising.

I taught this to dd by drawing circles and dividing them into fractions. So taking the example above, draw 5 circles, halve them then halve them again into quarters. Draw another quarter. The child can then see why you are doing 5 times 4 and add one to get the number of quarters.

You have all been very helpful, thank you.

Lonecat and Richmal - that's helped explain it to me so I understand it now!!

Yoghurthoney - some of those worksheets look really useful, thanks.

Have also looked at this, this week with yr 5 dd also said to be working at level 5c. I did it the same as richmal by drawing circles. Sometimes seeing it visually helps.
