How much PE for ks2?

Just that really. How much time should be allocated to PE lessons for 8 year olds? Also if the kit that is sent in, is wrong according to the school, are they allowed to sit that child out of the lesson. (The shorts are the issue, same style of shorts since reception, now they tell my dc they are wrong and not to wear them again or they can't join in. What are your thoughts? I thought as a nation we were meant to be encouraging our youngsters to participate in physical activity not sit them out for trivial matters.

My DC has 2 hour sessions of PE a week.

Children will be made to sit out if they don't have appropriate PE kit.
Assuming the shorts were fit for purpose (and not e.g. very small or tight) I would expect the school to let the child take part on the occasion the "problem" was noted and ask them to change them for next time (are you sure this didn't happen?).

My DDs both KS2 (Y4 & Y6) have about 2 hours a week - 2 sessions.

DD1 (Y4) also has forest school which can involves walks, climbing trees, building things like forts, gardening, etc... all out in fresh air - so I suspect that counts as physical exercise too. That lasts about 2 hours (big block out of their morning).

On the short thing: seems a bit unfair to have the child sit out but possibly a way of keeping out sports kit/ etc... which can get very expensive.

I tend to just send in what they ask and shorts are usually just plain (bicycle short style) from somewhere like Tesco/ Sainsbury's.
