Apologies for going off topic but just wondering for those of you who have been there already when your child's birthday is on a school day do you do all presents before/after school or a mix and apart from a special breakfast any good traditions ?

Thank you

We have done present from me and DH in the morning before school, and other family presents after. Party at the weekend.

CaterpillarCara · 18/11/2013 20:48

We get up early and have fairy cakes in a café near school. You get very shocked looks from other customers!

grabaspoon · 18/11/2013 20:50

We do presents before school with a special breakfast then something after school ie friends over for a party tea etc - party at the weekend.

Sparkleandshine · 18/11/2013 20:52

we just have his party at the nearest weekend... and his gifts too. Even at 8 DS is fine with this, and younger they just don't notice.

He takes sweets to school on the day.

3bunnies · 18/11/2013 21:06

In the first year or two we shifted the presents to the weekend before. It seemed harsh to let them open lovely presents then drag them off to school/bed. Generally the pattern was party the Sat before, family presents Sun before, special meal on the day. When they are a bit older they can manage to have a present or two in the morning and wait for the evening for the rest.

BackforGood · 18/11/2013 21:07

Presents from us, and from siblings, in bed before school. Tended to have a 'tea party' with grandparents and (local) Aunts and Uncles at the weekend.
School friends party on a different weekend.
My dc LOVE having 3 birthdays Grin

marmitecat · 18/11/2013 21:46

Pancakes for breakfast then presents then take cake to school to share with classmates. Go in wearing birthday age badges from cards. Ds couldn't wait until the weekend for his presents!

NynaevesSister · 19/11/2013 05:01

So far have only had one school day birthday as usually his birthday falls in the Easter hold. We did presents and special birthday breakfast. Then friends for tea and party at weekend. I also took in cupcakes I made myself for the class.

PermanentMenstrualTension · 19/11/2013 05:11

Not sure yet, DS 7th on Wednesday and DH has to be away worse luck so worried it might be a bit of a damp squib, if that's the right expression.

I'm thinking special breakfast, school, then his grandparents are coming over for cake and their present. Rest of presents when DH gets home hopefully around 6.

Birthday badge to school, cupcakes for classmates, party at the weekend.

vvviola · 19/11/2013 05:30

We aren't really morning people in our house, so special breakfasts etc just don't happen, much as I would love them to.

So the past 2 years with DD1 we've done party at weekend (with visit from grandma and uncle), birthday presents from everyone but us then. Special dinner.

On the day - present from us in the morning & quick Skype call with my parents before school. Then choice of what's for dinner that evening.

Works pretty well at the moment.

octopusinastringbag · 19/11/2013 05:43

Presents before school, a special packed lunch, sweets for birthday friends if I remember to buy them, out for dinner in the evening.

Tailtwister · 19/11/2013 06:30

A favourite breakfast, maybe one small present and opening the main presents/birthday meal in the evening. Then usually 2 parties at the weekend. One for friends and the other a family meal with Grandparents..

shutitweirdo · 19/11/2013 06:53

This year ds will have his lunch wrapped up like presents to unwrap at lunchtime at school. A few presents before school but most after. He usually has a party on the inset day before his birthday.

DeWe · 19/11/2013 09:37

None of us are morning people, and I guess the dc also have a certain amount of patience.
So we are presents after dh comes home in the evening, follwed by a birthday tea and cake. That'll often be about 6pm by the time he's home.

This year dd2 was away on a camp for her birthday so she had to wait until she came home the next day.

CMOTDibbler · 19/11/2013 09:41

Present from us in the morning, then special tea of his choice in the evening. Party with friends the closest weekend.

itscockyfoxagain · 19/11/2013 09:47

It is DDs birthday today, she is in school nursery and DS's birthday is in the summer holidays so it is the first time I have done this but; we have given her her present from us and DS has given his early this morning before DH went to work so she had an hour to play with them. The family will visit this evening and she is having a birthday party with school friends on Sunday.

noramum · 19/11/2013 14:56

Normally DD gets her presents at breakfast, a cake when she is back from school and the party at the weekend. This works since she was at nursery. Only the first year she got her presents in the afternoon as she decided to sleep in and we had to rush out in 10 minutes to be on time.

This year poor DD didn't even have a cake or a party until a full weekend after. She had a theatre play the whole weekend, her birthday was the full dress rehearsal. The only thing was ice cream with a candle at a restaurant we went for early dinner between 2 performances.

AbbyR1973 · 19/11/2013 22:18

Usually, presents after breakfast from me and sibling... you'd be surprised how quickly they can get ready for school when presents are on the cards. After school grandparents, uncles etc might pop over with more presents and family meal out plus cake. Party is at the weekend.
DS1's birthday is next Tuesday. He'd be furious if I relocated his birthday to the weekend, except the party, as in the posters that have said presents at the weekend. DS's know the date of their birthday despite being 4 and nearly 6... I'd never get away with it even if I wanted to.

ChocolateHelps · 19/11/2013 22:51

Great timing OP, I very nearly did post this the other day.

just finished wrapping DD2s present all set up to play with in the Hi Bonny & Jonathan

I've asked Danny for his availability to fit your carpet

Hi it'have a full day available to you on Monday 2nd to do as much of Job as u like and a 3/4 day on Thursday 5th to finish up? Might have some tine inbetween but will know more 2 Moro.how do those days sound?

Sent from my iPhone It's a play stall/shop (recommended on bargain Xmas thread couple of weeks ago) and I reckon she'll have an hour to play before school. She's in reception. Having 2 of her friends, each with their mum and big sister so there will be 6 girls and the 2 mums over for birthday tea after school then family party on Saturday

Nerfmother · 19/11/2013 22:54

Chocolate Grin

UniS · 19/11/2013 22:57

big present before school, cards before school. other presents after school or when we see grandparents.

Rufus44 · 19/11/2013 23:00

When they were younger it was presents in the morning (which nearly killed me...having to be happy that bloody early)

Now they are older 10,11 and 14 we wait til the evening. They have a marks and Spencer's cake after school and we go out to our local for tea, doesn't matter what day it is

They usually have their party, cake etc on the nearest convenient weekend

LittleMissGreen · 19/11/2013 23:13

They have their presents before school - but they generally only have 2 so it doesn't take long to unwrap.
We try to take them out for dinner on their birthday or nearest suitable weekend.

Frikadellen · 19/11/2013 23:42

Big special breakfast for the morning. (usually eggs or pancakes)

with presents from siblings grandma and dh & I.

Party at another time.

We are not morning people but a birthday is different
