With the big freeze coming, how do you keep boys' legs warm on the school run?

Do people tend to put thermals under the trousers, put on a big old snow suit, or something else? Just trying to get organised before everything sells out! Thanks in advance

I wasn't planning on doing anything for my school-aged DS. I don't do anything special to keep my legs warm! We have waterproof trousers for when it's wet.

I put tights under trousers and extra thick socks on my ten month old.

Not done before. Keep moving. Nice warm hat, coat and gloves has been enough for my DC. I rarely wear much else. Got too hot quite easily when used to go skiing. Didn't like wearing the thermals, although people had recommended them.

once at school I don't think people worry about it do they? my daughters are only in tights or over the knee socks (well and a pinafore etc before anyone comments)

there was a little boy in my daughter's class last year who wore long johns which my daughter came home quite fascinated about after they got changed for PE. she had no idea such things existed.

Nothing. DS is still in shorts! He's never cold enough to warrant anything special other than trousers.

DS1 is in reception. It is a nightmare just getting him to wear a coat and have one fastening done up, let alone wear hats, scarves and gloves. So when it comes to legs I just thank the lord he actually agrees to wear trousers He does run about pretending to be Captain Adorable from Gigglebiz though so that keeps him warm.

DS2 is in a pushchair, I don't put anything under his trousers but try to make sure he's wearing his jeans or cords, both of which are slightly padded. He sits on the bottom bit of his cosytoes but doesn't like the top bit being zipped on (he is v tall and finds it constricting I think).

waterproof overtrousers if its very wet but otherwise i dont believe it gets cold enough here if they are walking to need anything else. long johns if sitting still watching rugby or similar.

Winter boots and ordinary school trousers. My DS has his coat off at school this morning and is was -2C.
I usually find they will tell you when it's cold.

Depends how much snow we are walking through.
If it is just cold, then nothing - just coat/hat/gloves
If a few inches of snow on the ground - at least waterproof trousers and wellies (phew glad I noticed that had autocorrected before I posted), to make sure they don't get too wet on the way.
If a foot of snow on the ground (or more - last school year was up to 4 feet) then probably a snow suit, or joggers and water proof trousers and get changed into school uniform when arrive .

Thanks all, he's in reception. I was freezing last year so just ordered some thermal leggings for me, but it think I forgot that he doesn't stand around waiting for him in the school yard and he is always moving so you're all right, he won't need them. One more thing ticked off the list, thanks!

I put long socks on my ds' in winter. Not much else you can do...

And thanks for the suggestions of waterproof trousers, I'll pick up a pair, just in case.

Ds (year 2) insists on shorts all year round. He scoots to school and complains if I try and put a coat on him even in snow. He does wear gloves and a hat without complaining usually.

I think as parents we can forget they are charging around all the time, we are the ones standing still.

DS doesn't do wearing trousers. Last time he DS was in April for the St George's Day parade with cubs. Does help that we live 2 minutes away from school but people do ask me if he's cold...

DS wore tights last year when he was in Reception. Grey and grey/black striped ones from H&M. He loved wearing them and used to ask to put them on.
I'm not sure if he'll be so keen this year so if not, I'll probably get him some longer, possibly thermal socks.

When we have the snow I give the children thermal leggings to put on under their clothes. You can buy them from M and S. Be sure to get the boys ones a they are designed like pants so they do not have to keep pulling them up and down!

He didn't even wear a coat today, either.
Fully expecting a word in my ear at 3:10pm from teacher.

Not school run but DS plays a lot of football and wears leg skins under his shorts. These would also work under school trousers so if he got cold legs I would get him to wear them. No way he'd wear tights or thermals.

I used to put DS in thermals when it was really freezing.
But I'm sure that he'd have been fine without them, actually. I feel the cold much more than he does.

Im a warm enough obsessive! Both mine wore thermal vests and long johns in winter. DD who really used to suffer from the cold as a smally would have snowboots too. Hats, gloves and a waterproof coat were also a must.

Our school insist on shorts for boys and skirts for girls; no trousers at all. I think it's astonishing in 2013
