Book bands - where should he be after 1 term?

DS will have completed his first term at school by Christmas (P1- Scotland) and I'm wondering where he would be expected to be book band wise by then. He didn't read at all before starting in Sept and is currently on the Biff, Chip and Kipper reading scheme. He has reading booked 3x week and is currently on the red band which I think is the second one (after pink).

I don't know where he is in relation to the rest of the class as I haven't gone down the route of asking. I considered it, but thought it would be counter productive (I have an annoying competitive streak which I don't want to unleash!). I would like to gauge where he is on 'average' though, just for my own piece of mind. He doesn't appear to be struggling with the books he currently has.

In the first year of school they seem to be happy if they reach red/yellow by the end of the summer term. So if he is comfortable on red at the moment then he is doing well. He could go up at any rate from now though, it depends how quickly he picks up the different sounds and blending skills. In DD1's class last year there were at least 2 of her friends started as non readers although they knew their initial phonics and by February half term were on level 6/7. Others were still on pink/red in the summer.

He sounds like DS3 - started as a non-reader (knew some letters) now book band 2.
Looking at the ORT book band tree red looks about right for winter term, yellow by the summer.

If you wish to unleash your competitive streak DS2 started a non reader (knew a few letters), was reading with top year 1 group by October. DS3 is definitely not in his league!

On whatever level he can read and enjoy reading.

Thanks for the replies. It's reassuring to know he's doing ok.

I know there's a huge range of ability, but I'm just anxious to ensure I'm doing all I can to assist him but at the same time not push too hard. He still loves to be read to (the likes of Secret 7) and we have 2 reading books home 3x a week, but we don't do much reading from him apart from that.

That's amazing progress from your DS2 LittleMissGreen! The teacher must have been really impressed with how quickly he picked it up.

I know what you're getting at itscocky and I do agree. I have always been fiercely competitive on a personal level and am determined not to project that onto my children. It's something I have to work hard on though. I just want to ensure that in my efforts not to do that, I don't let him down by not supporting him enough iyswim.
