Antibiotics and school

Can anyone give me advice on asking schools to give antibiotics?

My 4 year old is going down with tonsillitis and, as she gets it quite badly, is likely to be prescribed a 10 day course of antibiotics, 4x a day, by tomorrow. When she was in nursery they had no problem giving meds i.e. finishing a course of antibiotics. But today I checked with her school and they insist they won't give anything and that someone has to come in to give it. This is impossible for me to do (1hr commute).

So it looks like she'll have to have week off when, from experience, she'll be perfectly fit to go in (and all my leave will be used up so we'll be in a pickle for school hols).

Any advice, pleeeease?

Is there anyone locally who can come and give it to your dd. ?

I would take them at their word - I sent my 5yo in and the school were ostensibly happy to do it, kept them in the office fridge etc - form filled in, disclaimrs et al/

they forgot to do it the first day
second day he was sent to office but got lost

third day I kept him at home, till he had finished the course - it was only for a tooth he had had out already, and he was fit for school but they hadn't got a leg to stand on when I said he would have to stay off to actually get his medicine at the right time.

No family to help, and we've only just started school so don't know any available mums well (DD goes to after school so I don't get the school gate chats). One local Mum did kindly offer to help but she's got a little one to care for and commitments some days. So, quite understandably, giving my DD meds on time wouldn't be her first priority.

My son has been given antibiotics at school. I had to fill in a form with dosage, timings, etc. and he went to the school office every day for them. So it can be done.

Would love to stay at home with her but first I'd use up all my leave and have none for school holidays. Then when I get over a certain amount of time off I would lose my job.

Can u maybe give it in the morning, after school , bedtime and then wake her at night to do it? I know that's not appealing really but it's only a week.

Check with Doctor about the spacing of doses. We had similar situation and Dr said on school days DS could take double dose before school, one at pickup and one at bedtime. Obviously this was specifically for US and not general medical advice! But check whether it could work for you.

Don't trust school office to do it - DS's friend had to take something at lunchtime and they relied on him (aged 4) to remember to go to the office at lunchtime and remind them. As you might expect, the child had more "important" things to do at lunchtime than remember to leave his friends and go to the office. Mum ended up having to go in to give the dose herself.

Some antibiotics can be taken 3 time a day, it might be worth asking the doctor if she can have those.

Great idea souperb I'd forgotten that one lovely medic once suggested morning double doses!!! (didn't need them at the time as nursery managed).
Certain that she'll be off for 2 days so will maybe get 'official clarification' from head before she goes back.

Thank you everyone Thanks

Think I panicked when faced with schools apparent 'brick wall' stance. Have now looked up all the antibio's DD may be prescribed (& has been in past) so can have an informed chat with GP later.

Though DD was going to school to learn, turns out I'm learning too Smile
