Spellings for 5 year old?

What are 5 year olds able to spell.
DS has cerebral palsy and although has a few words and can get his needs met he doesn't have the mouth control to speak coherently.
However convinced he can read I asked him to spell a few words by holding up 2 letters.
He managed to spell mummy, daddy baby, bad, bear, and elephant.
But my mind is blank I want him to be able to spell by sounding out (I'm doing the sounding) but I don't want to do words which are too hard. Is there any online resource that can point me in the right direction for what a usual 5 year old is able to spell?

5 year olds would begin with 2 & 3 sound words - so mum, dad, cat, dog, in, at, on

The phonics programme I use (Sounds-Write) would start in week 1 with mat, sit, sat, Sam, Tim, it, at, am wk2 map, sit, nap, pot, pan, not, man. etc so that new sounds are introduced gradually rather than just random words.

you can get spelling game/jigsaw sets which might be worth looking at for him. there is often a picture of an object and then the letters are there to spell out the word. or some are just the letters, bit like flashcards so he could put them together to spell out the words.

I don't think there is such a thing as too hard, if he can do it then it isn't too hard for him. but Mrz (as usual) is right and you should introduce the sounds in a logical order and build up the word length.

it might be worth googling to see if there are any suggestions of things for children with verbal dyspraxia as that prevents them being able to make the sounds with their mouths so the end result will be similar, CAN read or spell but can't communicate it.

good idea I'll look into that
