How often does someone listen to your child read in Reception?

Is there a recommended frequency e.g. 3x a day or twice a week? And how heavily do schools rely on parent helpers to do this?

If it is not logged in her journal do I assume DD didn't read to a grown up on a particular day?

my daughters read/are reading to an adult twice a week in reception. Very rarely a teacher, usually once a week is the TA (who is EXCELLENT) and the other time is either the TA or a helper of some sort/student. don't think they are generally parent helpers - not from the names anyway, they are nearly always people on the staff list as TAs or other assistant staff. They always log it in the reading record.

Once a week... most weeks.

bundaberg · 15/11/2013 21:24

i have absolutely no idea!

musicalfamily · 15/11/2013 21:25

5 minutes once a week, generally the TA. It's terrible really.

Itsjustafleshwound · 15/11/2013 21:27

I think it really depends on what is on that week school wise. I do think/hope that at least the teacher or TA has read to DS at least once a week.

AliceinSlumberland · 15/11/2013 21:33

Can I just say getting through readers is hard - 5 mins a child is 2 and a half hours a week. TAs and helpers are total life savers. Plus it always takes longer, choosing a new book, interrupted by other children who need attention, etc. Reading at home is so helpful to children because there's just so many if them to get through in class time. If you wanted them to be heard twice a week it would be 5 hours of class time, basically a whole day a week if it was just down to the teacher. Sadly there's too much other stuff we have to fit in to be able to do this.

We hear ours once a week and children who are struggling more often.

Enb76 · 15/11/2013 21:34

Mine has only read once to her teacher, once to a parent helper who also happens to be my friend. I'm not unduly concerned but then she gets a lot of reading time with me.

AliceinSlumberland · 15/11/2013 21:35

Also a TA can't really take the whole class while the teacher hears readers, but the teacher can take the rest of the class while the TA hears readers, so that's why it is often (highly skilled and experienced) TAs who hear readers. It means that teaching isn't as interrupted by it - it would be difficult for the teacher to not teach for 2.5 hours a week.

DD is in yr1 now but when in reception she was listened to twice a week 121 and another time in guided reading (small group of 4/5 kids taking turns).

freetrait · 15/11/2013 21:54

Not that much, but enough to be on book 7 of 10 in a set of books that is red/yellow band so that's not too bad. And she's progressing very well, with comments from the teacher/TA in her reading diary, some nice personal ones.

RandomMess · 15/11/2013 21:59

No idea but my youngest three didn't learn to read until year 1 and they are no way academically behind.

lunar1 · 15/11/2013 21:59

3 times a week with the teacher or TA.

Nevercan · 15/11/2013 22:00

Once a week with the teacher or TA

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 15/11/2013 22:04

old school,
parent helper once a week
group reading with TA once a week

New school every day
3x a week teacher
2x a week TA

beanandspud · 15/11/2013 22:06

DS reads to his teacher every day.

TillySwat · 15/11/2013 22:09

twice a week, always recorded in journal, but book is changed as often as i comment that she has read and enjoyed it.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 15/11/2013 22:11

Every single day. He will have a Welsh book and an English book on the go and will alternate daily between the two. He will continue to read the same book until he knows it back to front then move onto the next level. I read with him his school book every evening and write in a comments booklet after reading as does the TA.

LittleMissGreen · 15/11/2013 22:12

2-3 times a week, one of which is always with the teacher. Books changed once a week, but he gets a few each time.

AliceinSlumberland · 15/11/2013 22:13

Those that get heard every day, I can only guess that they have a lot of helpers/TAs or hear them as a group/in pairs and the write in the journal. If not, could someone let me know how you fit in 2.5 hours if reading a day, I'd love to know their secrets!

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 15/11/2013 22:18

Hi Alice my son gets heard everyday and is in a class of around 28 pupils with one teacher and two TA's, although one of the TA's doesn't start until 11.30am so not sure how it's done but I think it's great and DS is really taking off with his reading as there is so much emphasis on it.

olibeansmummy · 15/11/2013 22:28

Never :( they don't hear individual readers and haven't started guided reading yet... I guess he's lucky I read with him every night...

Worried123456 · 15/11/2013 22:30

I actually think it's a complete waste of a teacher's time to listen to every child read more than once a week. What do you think your child is doing for the other 2 and a half hours in a week whilst the other 29 in the class are reading to the teacher? Quality learning...?

Reading to an LSA or parent helper is different as the rest of the children are still being taught by the teacher. I think that a parent listening to their child read for ten minutes every evening is far more valuable though.

LackaDAISYcal · 15/11/2013 22:34

Usually twice a week at my DS's school, but at least once, but the foundation unit is split into four groups of 15 reception and 10 nursery children and each group has a teacher and a TA, and usually a student teacher as well so there are lots of adults to go round. They all have a designated key worker (could be either a teacher or TA) and it's usually the key worker that does the reading with them.

LittleMissGreen · 15/11/2013 22:36

Does it depend on class size too? DS only has about 15 children in the class.

TeaJunky · 15/11/2013 22:43

In my dd's reception class, her teacher said she's read the book three times by the time she brings it home.

By herself, in a group with the TA and one to one with teacher.

She also reads with me every night before I read her a bedtime story and she picks out common words she knows on the pages.

This is really working for her and she's moving up a level next weekSmile
