Can anyone recommend a book that has a longer story but is for a beginner please?

My DD loves reading and is confidently reading green level at school.

She's asked for a bookmark for Christmas!!

I want to get her a bigger book so she can use the bookmark but the only books I can find at her level are shorter stories i.e Biff, Chip and Kipper types.

Can anyone recommend a book that would suit her level but has a longer story please?

TIA

Can't think of any long books for green level but by christmas she'll probably be on longer books. Dick king smith, rainbow fairies, the 'daisy' books etc
Even if you are reading the books to her she could still use the bookmark.

givemeaclue · 11/11/2013 14:53

Book treasuries or collections are also good for bookmark use!

The easier Flora the Fairy books are good.

There are some blue (possibly green I forget) banana books (equivalent of stage 7) Flat Stanley books which are easier than the normal Flat Stanley ones.

Have a look at 'Little Animal Ark' and 'Princess Poppy'. They might do the job? (The Book People have a set of Princess Poppy First Readers at the moment - 10 for £9.99) Have a look on Amazon and you can 'look inside' to judge level...

This link has a few real books by stage, although not sure how long they are:

www.essex.gov.uk/Libraries-Archives/libraries/childrens-library/Documents/Books_for_children_beginning_to_read.pdf

The colours they use don't match but the stages do - I think green is stage 5.

Periwinkle007 · 11/11/2013 19:28

green is stage 5, most books that are a bit longer are probably at least stage 7 to be honest but by Christmas this is perfectly feasible depending on her progress.

I would probably look at things like 'The Kitten with No Name' by Vivian French or Julia Donaldson 'The Quick Brown Fox Cub' and 'The Wrong Kind of Bark'.

I don't know what sort of level these ones are but they say they are 'written to support the development of vocabulary, sentence and story creation skills that young children will be introduced to in the early years of school' and that they are for children starting to read longer stories for the first time so might be worth a look. We have the original Princess Poppy books but I haven't looked at the text closely enough to know what sort of level they are - my 2 are reading different things at the moment.

Thank you everyone.

I think I'm going to order the Princess Poppy ones from the book people. I'll split the 10 books between DD and her brother for Christmas (he's only the reading level below her and likes princess stories too!).

thegamesafoot Looks like green is stage 5 because DD is reading 'Gran' and 'Castle Adventures' at the moment and they are labelled as stage 5 on your link.

I thought Horrid Henry was stage 12? That is where my DC school have it (not that it matters!)

Early reader books are good, DD will still re-read hers.

imip · 11/11/2013 22:06

I've also purchased the princess poppy first readers for dd2. She is on the same reading level. Having already received the books, I think they are perfect. I'd love her to be reading something less 'princess ish', however, I know this is perfect for getting her into reading and making her feel empowered and giving her the thirst to read more.

Periwinkle007 · 11/11/2013 22:10

ah - they might be Simpson - the list I took them off seemed a bit hard to tell what was lime and what was beyond lime as both were green!

simpson · 11/11/2013 23:54

I also think some Horrid Henry books are harder than others too which does not help with levelling them Grin

Hi Soullessbutsunny

We found the Sally Gardner Early Reader Princess story series (can get through Amazon, large news agents & book stores) really good. They're in chapters but still illustrated.

We found them a nice bridge before formal chapter books and DD loves stories about princesses.

Sally Gardner link here: www.sallygardner.net/books/early-readers/

Amazon has a look inside feature for Cinderlla here: www.amazon.co.uk/Cinderella-Early-Reader-Readers-ebook/dp/B00654KNFW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1384253251&sr=8-4&keywords=sally+gardner+early+reader

My DDs both also read the rainbow magic fairies at this in between stage when they wanted to be reading 'big girl' books but weren't quite ready.

HTH

SoullessButSunny · 14/11/2013 20:46

Thanks everyone.

I'm also going to get some of the early reader books from Amazon.

Their birthday is in January so I'll split the books between them and then spread over xmas/birthday.
