Feedback on S1's handwriting (start of year 4)

S1 recently auditioned for the school play and got a part only to be told by his teacher that because his handwriting was so far below standard for his age he was on special measures and so could no longer take part as it was an extra curricular activity. AIBU to question this with the school ? I accept his handwriting isn't brilliant but is it really so far below standard for the start of year 4. Before I take it forward and make an idiot of myself any feedback from teachers/parents with experience would be welcome. Photo of this weeks homework on profile page. Thanks.

It is right and proper that the school should ask your ds to concentrate on improving his handwriting.

It is cruel and unfair for them to ban him from the playgroup because of his handwriting.

Check this is actually the case, then I would challenge them on it on the strongest terms.

Seems rather unfair - handwriting looks much better than mine. Similar sized letters, nicely spaced, runs within lines - it's not copperplate but I wouldn't call it offensive...

I would check with teacher, as it seems rather barking to me. Does she have form for that kind of thing? Or did DS not get a part and is saving face a bit? Seems a real shame if it is correct - when would non-academic children every get a chance to do extra-curricular stuff and do something they may be good at? And most people have some weak area.

lordy - far better than my DDs, who is at same stage. Seems like a nasty ting to do and I would not be happy at all with it. Pretty sure it would not happen at my DDs school.

Handwriting looks pretty good to me. Far better than my DS who is Yr4 (though he does have a visual impairment which doesn't help) I would definitely nit be happy with a DC losing a place in the play over this.

I teach that age... writing looks acceptable to me. I can read it even in that teeny pic.

I can understand a school wanting to prioritise things, but this seems very odd.

Is there perhaps more to it? Do you have the full story?
