funny story about phonics

Just thought I'd share this little story to cheer up everyone

My dss were playing restaurants. One was ordering a meal and one was the waiter writing down the order. They were really into it and so I left them to it and went to catch up on the lunch time news on telly.

After a while my ds (age 6 by the way) presented me with a scrap of paper. He had his really proud face on which he has when he has worked hard on something. I took the paper and part of my brain was impressed by the neatness of the handwriting until the rest of my brain took over completely shocked.

"Did you write this?" I asked
"Yes", he replied.
"What does it say?" I carefully asked trying to conceal my emotions.
He pointed to the beautifully written words PISS and COCK and said "pizza and coke".

That's phonics for you.

great story maggi

I saw a Tv series about phonics a while ago. Are almost all schools doing it now?

:) you did very well to stay calm and ask what he'd written

you must keep the scraps of paper. embarrass him at any given point when he's older.

small DS many years ago sounded out carefully while he wrote down the word 'ears' but when I looked at it it read 'eyes'...he explained it patiently 'it says eeeee yus' :)

My DS has dyslexic problems so his spelling leaves a lot to the imagination. My favorite is "Awwwwwwfisherly" for "Officially"

When DD1 was in Reception a friend of hers brought her a little note with a drawing the day after her birthday which thanked her for the "kaik" she brought into school. That was so cute, he meant 'cake' of course.

AlgebraRocksMySocks · 27/08/2010 08:30

that is fantastic! :o

I love that stage of spelling (can't remember the name) where they experiment with phonic rules.

ValiumSingleton · 27/08/2010 08:31

I was in school helping with reading and child read out to me " Help I am knackered"
Then looked at me with a mixture of terror/ puzzlement in his eyes obviously knowing the word was not acceptable but hey it was written in his book.
" Umm " said I " I think it says " Help I am naked "" ( Parrot had had feathers blown off it by magic trick gone wrong.) Grin
