How unsettling is it to change primary school?

We may be moving from Newcastle to Manchester, maybe after the summer or else after Christmas. Is it a really awful thing to change my sons primary school? He is coming to the end of his reception yr, so due to go into Yr1 in Sept. He has settled well, is doing fine, made friends. It is my one big concern, among some others (like moving to a new area with 3 small kids). Has anyone done this? I feel awful uprooting them, but it looks like we are going........jobs etc. Thanks in advance.

why would you move from Newcastle???? you must be crazy I have been trying to get dh to move there for years

Your babies will be fine, children adjust so well and they will be the new kids so lots of others will want to make friends with them

Good luck (but stay up north

We are moving during the summer hols for dd1 (6), between p1 and p2 (Scotland). I moved school between p2 (in Scotland) and p3 (London!). You just adapt - at this age I think you are more adaptable than at any pther stage. The p2-3 move was far less of a prob than the 500 mile move between primary and secondary school for me.

Our eldest daughter has been at her current primary school for 2 years and moved from another primary school in her 1st year there.......and she was being bullied at this school and the change has done her good as she is now getting on great and is very popular in her present school, her younger sister was in the schools nursery and is due to start the same school in August but we are setting up a business and may be moving if we find a property....so I am too very worried about moving my kids schools. We have beat ourselves up over this...........and it is a real tough one......we are trying to get a business in our area but if push comes to shove we will have to move......and this is a real worry............

I attended 5 different primary schools and I coped with the moves, can't remember any problems. However, I have an elder sister who is just a year older so I did have a playmate stay with me throughout. When my younger brother moved to his 3rd school, he stopped speaking completely. He didn't speak at school for a whole year. It was obviously too much for him.

I was lucky in that the first 3 changes were improvements in my point of view so that was ok. The last two weren't and that makes it very hard on children.

I think if you just move once after reception, it isn't too bad really. I am trying to make dd's childhood more settled although I would ideally like to move country sooner rather than later.

Good luck with the move!

I switched my kids primary schools when we moved and was very worried. They were fine and much prefer this school, they settled VERY quick, new kids are always popular at primary age. Good luck, they will be fine. Stockport is a good area (well most of it) PM me if you need any more info about the area!
