How do I encourage DD to do more?

We just had parent's evening and DD 6 has been told that she needs to do more.
We were given targets for maths and the teacher said she was sure she could do them, it was just that she never showed that she could.
She also only writes the bare minimum and is behind with her handwriting. DD said she will write more - but I know she won't as it's always a battle and she just moans so much about writing.
Any advice on how to encourage the writing and get her to be more confident in herself with maths?

Maybe find out if writing is hurting her hand?

I had a problem at school where teachers kept on insisting to my parents that I was very able, but that I simply wasn't writing enough to prove it. The problem is that gripping a pen for any length of time produced real discomfort and I hated writing intensely.

Ergonomic pens helped a little, but it wasn't until I could use a laptop that I really took off academically.

she does complain of her hand aching and she is told that more practice will solve that.
I don't know much about ergonomic pens - I know they have a pencil at school but not sure if there is anything special about it other than their name on it!

Is it her hand hurting or her arm?

It might be worth looking at her pencil grip.

Is she hypermobile? This can make writing really uncomfortable and even painful. I would definitely suggest getting it looked at as there are lots of things that can be done to make it easier for her.

I'll also second pencil grips or ergo pencils as a good start!
