Child class representatives for Reception

DD has been "elected" class representative (one of two). She is in Reception, and we have no idea what this means - unsurprisingly, neither does she! Has this happened to anyone else? What can it mean?

School council? Two from each class in DD1's school.

mummytime · 24/10/2013 15:52

She will go to "meetings" where they will discuss things about school. Some ideas from the adults and some suggested by the children.
Often it is things like "School Lunches", "Changes to Uniform", "Christmas Activities", "Eco-Project" etc.
It probably means she is relatively confident, and probably that people like her. Being Class Rep in reception is probably not worth putting on her CV.

Good grief how bizarre

Periwinkle007 · 24/10/2013 20:05

I would assume school council too. Surprised they do it for reception. my daughter is the Yr1 class rep but reception aren't included.

Or it will be something that changes every day or week. For example, taking the competed register to the school office, being "front of line" or "back of line" - both clearly important roles. I love the fact that my DD's school, even now in Y2, has a constant churn of responsible roles for the children to perform which they seem to love. It may be that OP's school is different and have elected a single representative for a class for a year which, if it is the case, I think is a real shame since so many children get so much from being given a chance to be responsible.

Periwinkle007 · 24/10/2013 20:25

good point Alien Attack, hadn't thought of those roles. In our school reception don't assign anyone to anything, just mix up who does things whenever. Yr1 then have 4 different types of monitor roles which change weekly so everyone gets a chance to do each of them over the year. then they have one child the rest of the class elect to be their representative on the school council for the whole year.

mummytime · 24/10/2013 20:36

Thats kind of what happens at my DCs Infant school, although they also have an Eco Team as well as school council. Then there is Garden Gang, monitors to hold doors (change weekly), to put out cushions then put them away, check computers etc. etc.
Of course then there was VIP of the week, Star of the Week (nominated by the support staff, one per class) and a whole host of other "special achievements" before you got to the coveted HeadTeacher's award.

Periwinkle007 · 24/10/2013 20:36

VIP of the week?

Floggingmolly · 24/10/2013 20:39

Dd was on the class council in Reception. The only thing she remembers is "there weren't enough skipping ropes in the playground, so we voted to get some more"...

Periwinkle007 · 24/10/2013 20:50

I have a feeling my daughter's suggestion will be to do with more hula hoops for the playground Floggingmolly

My DS school has school councillors. They were 'elected' during the first week of term before the staggered intake were all in.

mummy1973 · 24/10/2013 21:31

Ds is on school council. He suggested massages in class!

EvenWickedierDevil · 24/10/2013 21:35

My DD's reception class were asked who wanted to be a school councillor. DD decided she didn't want to because she would have missed play for the meetings. I was soooo proud. Grin

WestPier · 24/10/2013 21:36

My DD is an offical school bully buddy, she has a hat and every thing. She says she's nice to kids on the buddy bench, I like to think she nicks sweets and pulls the flush on little kids heads.

Periwinkle007 · 24/10/2013 21:51

massage? love it.

what does a buddy hat look like?

ours miss assembly for meetings

Wallina · 25/10/2013 12:24

Hugely enlightening! I must say that, while being proud, "good grief" also was my reaction... I think she does carry the register - one has to piece together what small pieces of information DD gives me with the even smaller pieces of information that sometimes float downwind from the school...

Yes my Reception DD is on the School Council - according to her it involves "going to meetings like mummy" lets hope her meetings don't take place down the pub like mine.

I did wonder what decisions were made at said meetings but like the fact that she's mixing with children from other classes/year groups.
