Was thinking perhaps dot to dots? Teacher is going to do extra work in a handwriting group, but trying to think how I can get him to improve without forcing him to sit and write at home?? need fun activities to keep his interest, he has never been big on drawing / colouring.

personally I would probably try some sort of reward/bribery type thing so if he has to do book reviews for school for example then if he does them extra neatly (or with a lot of effort to do so - some people just struggle to be neat) then he can get x y or z

Have a look here for large patterns and lines. and here for smaller ones.

Here for words to trace.

There are loads of options on each page- just click down the menu on the right hand side.

My son is a lot older than yours but has always struggled with handwriting since he started school. He is now 15 and teachers were beginning to say it would impact on his GCSE results as the examiner would not be able to read his writing. I asked if the SENCO could see him. She did help him to improve by isolating specific problems and getting him to work on them one per week eg. spacing, or 's' etc. It is a lot better but he will be using a laptop for GCSEs that require a lot of writing.

Also things like Hama beads
Both my DSs have lovely joined up handwriting (years 2&4) we have always done colouring in, dot to dots, drawing and Hama beads etc

They have an older sister (Year 6) and I didn't really do different things with the boys

I have TERRIBLE handwriting, it's not genetic Grin

Thanks so much - brilliant advice. He has always been v active so would rather dash about than sit and play. Have got hama beads and also thinking that lego may help as we have got lots of that.

thanks again for the great advice x
