Don't want my DD hot housed!

School have just got very excited because my DD apparently got 100% in a level 4 comprehension test. She's 7 and has just gone into year 3. I know she's clever, but she's also only 7 and has a huge amount to learn. She loves school and although I want them to push her and for her to be interested in her work, I don't want her teachers getting all over excited. Can I tell them to calm down a bit without sounding like I don't care? I just want her to have fun at school, make friends and be interesting. I'm really not fussed if she wins a nobel prize!

I can understand where you are coming from. You can talk to the school about how they are ensuring she is a well rounded child and able to cope both socially and emotionally in addition to her academic.

However, no matter what you want academically, if the do. Ot move your child on appropriately over the next 4 years, meaning at least level 6 by end of Year 6, Ofsted will see this as a major failing of the school. :(. High expectations is mandatory. So, maybe you are not bothered about a Nobel Prize, the school has to be!

We're just back from DS2's parent/teacher conference where we learnt he is a level 4a in maths (he's 6, just started Year 2). They also are very excited - maybe as Key Stage 1 SATS are coming up! - and came up with loads of ideas, some we like and others not.

Its tricky, but its finding the fine line between stretching them to ensure they don't get bored whilst fostering their love of a subject and not piling the pressure on.

I don't think school can " hot house" her. They haven't the teacher time etc. Just let them stretch her as she wants to be stretched and she'll soak it all up, love learning and go and do music/gym/rugby or what ever in her out of school time :)

But yup for the school she needs level 6 a the end of year 6 and that's probably easy peasy for her just by letting her learn at the rate she is "programmed to" naturally.
