Changing schools

Does anyone have any advice on moving areas and schools with 2 school age children.

I have 2 DC's, a 4 year old at school and a 2 year old. We plan to move in the next few years, so I imagine my youngest may also be at school by that point. I am just wondering if anyone can advise on the liklihood of being able to get 2 children school places in a decent school in our new area. It may well be a village so really only one small local school.

I know it all depends on the school having spaces in 2 year groups simultaneously but just wondered whether anyone has experience of doing this and what they did when perhaps one space came up.

We could possibly still drive to the existing school but this isn't ideal.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Depends on the area and demand for spaces.

Can you check potential schools or on the County council's website?

It's really a 'how long is a piece of string' question. Many schools won't have any spaces, some will have one or two, some will have spaces in most years. For example the village school here would be able to take a child in most years at the moment. Other schools will have a waiting list for every year.

Do you think I would be able to contact the school direct to get a rough idea of how things stand at the moment or would they not give this info out over the phone?

I phoned the school and they are at capacity in most classes. I'm sure this is not news to many people but I'm really surprised that there is a high chance that you can move area and end up with two children at different (and possibly not very good) schools. I guess you only move areas if you really have to?

Lots of areas have schools with spare places. They probably just are not the best schools. Anyone contemplating moving just has to do a lot of research.
