Bob: No Ordinary Cat - suitable for 7 year old?

The children's version of the book about street cat bob and James Bowen says it is suitable from 11 years. My almost 7 year old has put it on his ever growing christmas list as he is very keen to read it. Obviously the adult version deals with some pretty unsuitable topics for a 7yo but was wondering if anyone had read the children's version and could say if it has been suitably changed for children or whether I will have to tell him he needs to wait until he's older. Thanks

Reading the Amazon info and a few reviews it states there are drug references and in a review specifically a quoate that includes the words "the downturn someone's life can take if they use drugs". So have you had or are you happy to have that discussion with your 7 year old DS - if so then it might be suitable, if not then perhaps not yet!

We have had very basic discussion about people taking drugs but only on a very very basic level. I think I will order a copy and read it myself and maybe get DH to read it so we can discuss whether we think it's appropriate.

I brought it for my dd (9 so a bit older) but I skimmed through it and told her there would be a few bits that we would not be reading as we read it at bed time together.
I had a chat with her about why i would be missing bits out which she seemed ok with, she did really enjoy the story though.
