So my ds just started reception and been given some homework, just to draw family & favourite things etc, are we supposed to let them do it all including the writing who it is or would you label it?

Depends on how clearly your child can draw and write already. I don't label anything, but my daughter already could write pretty well before starting reception. If she couldn't then I would label.

Poppet1980 · 07/10/2013 19:53

Let them have a go at writing, then label after.

Adikia · 07/10/2013 20:06

I write the labels on a scrap of paper for DD to copy, other than that I check she knows what she's meant to be doing and then leave her to it.

I would just let her get it with it. It amazed me what DD's reception teacher could read, and I think it shows them what your child can do.

Nice for you child to feel proud of their own work too IMHO

SarfEasticated · 07/10/2013 20:09

I would just let her get on with it.

Herisson · 07/10/2013 20:30

Yes, let him get on with it. The teacher is very likely to talk to your child about it anyway, at which point your ds will say 'that says mum' etc.

Herisson · 07/10/2013 20:31

Obviously if he wants help from you, then do give it! But maybe if he wants to know how to write mum then you could say something like 'what sound do you think it starts with, what sound is in the middle' etc to give him the idea of how he might work it out.

reception teacher here.
Let her do her own writing then get her to read it to you.... then you label what she has written. Much better than copying in my opinion.

Periwinkle007 · 07/10/2013 20:34

just let them do it - if deciphering required of writing then I would put it on the back, or a post it and say what the child did herself or with help. If I was to help with any homework I would write it. If I wrote it for them to copy I would leave it obvious so the teacher could see it was copied etc.

Layl77 · 07/10/2013 20:37

Ok thanks, it's likely to be spelt wrong (I love this it's so cute!) so ill see how decipherable it is and decide then!!

I forgot too say... lots of praise at all writing attempts!

Layl77 · 07/10/2013 20:57

Thanks, will do. Don't know why I ask re spellings if I correct them I get told I'm wrong, London has a U apparently ... Good luck teacher!!

I can fully understand why London would have a u myself.

my 4 yr old wrote tenis racit the other day. I decided I couldn't explain to her that it is cqu in the middle of racquet as I don't think they will have come to that yet in reception...

noramum · 08/10/2013 07:16

We often asked, still do in fact, how DD would spell a word. Then, if necessary, correct her.

I think it is important for them to write it themselves but I prefer that they learn the correct spelling as well.
