Hi there my child has a project that is he got a £1.00 from school and he needs to make things to sell and then carry on making things and selling for a month. I am finding it really hard to think of what can be done with a pound any ideas anyone? Thanks

Can he use things he already has, or does everything he uses have to originate from this £1?

Cakes would be the obvious thing to start with - cheap and easy to sell to wealthy grandparent friends and family.

Some kind of food?
Homemade biscuits or cakes?
Bookmarks? - do a design, print and hey presto! Far cheaper than £1 too.

Have a look in the local pound shop for craft supplies, then your child could make things and sell them eg. Keying charms, beaded bracelets and hair bows?

Paint pebbles...
plant sunflower seeds,
spray paint (from pound shop) pine cones for Xmas..
make card bookmarks
find some twigs and make wands (bit of glitter goes a long way)

Biscuits. You sell him a £1 worth of ingredients to start him off (useful maths practice there!)

I have a fantastic recipe for home made lemonade if you like- sell it by the glass at break time? I think you could make 1.5l for a £1.

Biscuits. Cards. Bracelets.

Bookmarks using card scraps?
Christmas bookmarks using spare cards from last year? Could use the £1 for a bit of ribbon to decorate them.

Thanks everyone for all your ideas. The ideas are a great help really, hard job for a 6 year old.

Popcorn from popcorn kernels- not the microwave stuff (check your local healthfood store/ Holland and Barrett if the supermarket doesn't sell them). £1 will do enough to make plenty of bags to sell at 50p each and still nowhere near the mark up of the cinema!

Plant seeds in styofoam coffee cups and when they grow to seedlings, sell them for a profit. Use the profits to make and sell more.

mistlethrush · 27/09/2013 11:25

Plant seeds are no good at this time of the year - they will take too long to germinate for the 1 month turn around that the project has.

Flapjack / cakes / bookmarks / cards I think are the best options. Perhaps you could get him to make all your christmas cards for you this year?

MidniteScribbler · 27/09/2013 11:35

Sorry, it's Spring here, forgot it's the wrong time of year for you.

Making and selling cards would be a good one.

We did this last year and the variety of ideas was amazing. One Reception child tidied his toys at £2 a go. Have you got to organise the selling of the goods, or is the school putting on a sale? For our sale 1 child charged others to hold their pet gecko, and some did games ie treasure hunt, beat the goalie, pick the straws from the sand, throw a shaving foam pie at the stall holder, name the teddy. And lots and lots of cake!

not very boyish but if you have some lavender in the garden cut it, then cut some fabric squares or circles and stick some lavender in the middle, tie the top with ribbon.
