Am I supposed to correct all his spellings?

DS (Y1) has started bringing home 10 spellings a week - they are supposed to write it six times over the course of the week (hiding the word so they do it from memory), then write ten sentence using each of the words. Fairly time consuming on top of the reading, but hey.

He's responded to this really well - he is happy to get on with his homework, doesn't need much supervision. But in his sentences he gets the spelling of the word he is learning right, but lots of others wrong (phonetically plausible tho). So far, I haven't corrected him - would take forever and change the dynamic of the homework time. Should I be?

I'm not going to be able to catch the teacher for a while to ask directly, so wanted to canvas opinions here for now.

I wouldn't correct it all - if there are basic words he should know I would possibly correct them if he will take it well, if it will make him not want to do the homework then I wouldn't necessarily do so.

I agree with Fuzzy.

I would not correct unless its a word you think they should know (ie he has spelt it correctly before).

If he's keen and writing interesting sentences I would ignore it. Some children write less interesting sentences because they choose safe spelling words. You really don't want to put him off independent writing.
Next time you see the teacher you could ask his/her policy.
Another thing you could try is asking your son to read his sentences back to you then he might spot some mistakes himself.

Thanks all! Last night, one of his spellings was 'tonight' - so he wrote 'tonight I am doing my spelings'. Made me chuckle! I had to deter him from the sentence using the word 'fork' to be 'I will drop the fork down the toilet' - suggested it might not show that he understood what the word meant!
