The wearing of Kumon medals in school should not be allowed!

It's an out of school activity, nothing to do with school. Its nothing other than boasting and one upmanship.

If parents want to do it, great, but it is unrelated to any school work/reward system. Wear it at home and in non school time.

DS2 upset he had no medal, he does not need to do kumon. He can't understand why he does not have one to wear in school, he's 6, and I have explained that some of his friends do something separate outside school, now he wants to do it! £55 a month for being talk the same as school, no!

So I will have him upset again tonight as there was a lot of medal boasting in the playground this morning!!

shall I talk to the teacher?

Did they always give medals? I have known a few children that went to Kumon, dont remember medals.

What a great way to advertise though eh?

'Its not fair, I want a medal too'
'Ok, lets see what this Kumon is about'

I expect that is the desired effect.

I don't think my two would be envious of anyone having out of school maths help TBH.

DS1 has a home tutor in Year 2, but we didn't go round advertising the fact.

*had. He's Year 10 now.

To me, the widespread use o f Kumonjust shows parents have no faith in the school. It is happening everywhere so I would even say that a lot of parents do not have faith in the education system.

As to the medals, next week it will be about something else so don't worry. You can still ask the school though.

Butblimey you must live in an angsty place where ALL kids do Kumon! Or maybe they are right, personally I think primary math to be aiming too low

Not necessarily. It's just another way for parents to show off, IMO. I work with quite a few guys from the Far East, and none of their kids do Kumon. It's just not fashionable anymore.

Not envious at all, as already explained.

It just blurs the lines between outside activities and school. DS was confused that he did not have a medal for maths, because that is what his friends told him they had it for. I explained to my DS it was for something outside school and not from his teachers and he was fine.

Show and tell is fine, along with all the other stuff kids bring in. But on all day is a no no. The teacher agreed with me and the medals and other stuff from outside school is now only for show and tell only eg: girl in his class amazing and gymnastics and brought in a trophy for show and tell and that was great!
