Moving school - dilemma

My DD1 has just started primary school in north London - we are delighted with the school, and some of her friends from nursery are in her class. All good. But, we are moving house in a couple of weeks - about a mile further north from where we are, so the school run will be more convoluted. Currently a 10 minute walk, it will become a five minute walk, ten minute bus, five minute walk.

The current school is Islington, so DD2 should get a place on sibling, despite being way our of catchment (in Islington, sibling is the second criteria after looked after children).

The new house has a couple of schools within easy walking distance - both good with outstanding leadership, and I am fretting over what we should do. On the one hand, I would like her to go to one of the local schools - so afterschool playdates, activities, drop off/pick up, etc. are easier.

On the other hand, I am very worried about moving her. Starting school has been a big thing (she's fine with it, but it is a big change), and I am worried about moving her so quickly (assuming a place comes up in one of the schools!). The other consideration is that I work 4 days a week and we currently have a nanny, but when smallest goes to school, we won't have a nanny any more, and the current school would be more of an arse with drop off/pick up for me and DH.

Argh! What would you do?

Put her on the waiting lists for all the schools you are interested in and see what happens. If the schools are that outstanding you may find you have no hope of getting in anyway.

I'd say moving quickly (before she's settled) is in some ways better than getting her settled and then moving. But moving anytime while she's still young should be reasonably straightforward and you may well find for example that she makes friends with local children that go to the school she ends up as.

If you're only moving a mile away and the current school is 10 minutes walk, sounds like the whole journey would be walkable/cyclable? This might be easier than being at the mercy of the buses!

Thanks redsky - talking to the council, one of the schools has a long waiting list, but, we are pretty close, so I'd imagine we'd be wuite high up that list.

The other school I'm going to see tomorrow.

Agree on moving quickly - if we can!
