Welsh language education

Not a question that will affect my decision in any way, but have only just realised I dont know the answer! DS1 is hopefully going to a welsh language school (rising three nursery in January, so this also won't be relevant for a while anyway)

I know that phonics are used to learn english reading, but is a welsh equivalent used to teach welsh? He somewhat annoyingly! loves english phonics TV programmes... Is there a welsh equivalent, cause I'm worried they'll confuse him?

If you can think of any other questions I havent thought of, I'd appriciate answers to them too! Grin

Welsh is a phonetic language - once you know the Welsh alphabet you can read and write just about anything.

I wouldn't stop him from enjoying English phonics programmes - many children start year 3 (when English is introduced) being able to read and write in English very well.

Have you looked at the Cyw website?. There's links to welsh children's programmes and apps that your ds will probably enjoy.

My DSs all go to English medium, but DS2 started Welsh reading in year 1. It took him a month or so to pick up the Welsh phonetics (bear in mind we are not a naturally Welsh speaking family).

Don't worry about the confusion, most children pick up both side by side. We are a Welsh speaking family and my DC attend a Welsh medium school, but they could all read and write in English before it was formally introduced in Y3.

Welsh is a phonetic language, so (IMO) much more straightforward than English. Children just seem to accept though that they are different and just get on with it.

Ahh, brilliant, thank you :)

I did learn welsh in school too, but second language and dont remember much of the lessons. Thinking about it though, I do kind of have the hang of how words are pronounced without thinking about it even if I have almost no clue what they mean , so obviously its phonetic!

DH has the cyw app, I had a song from it stuck in my head which is why I remembered to post this tonight. Will have a proper look at the site though, ta :)

We've got a cyw CD with some alphabet songs on it. Your ds might like that!

Oo, I'll have a look!
