All school age parents, especially those of year 6's, please can you give me an honest answer to this.

I am a 2 day a week year 6 teacher and I have just discovered I am pregnant with a much wanted second baby. We are so excited, but my predicated due date is 24th may. So I will be leaving just before sats!

I only found out today but was wondering what a parents point of view on this would be. I love my class already and never want to let any of them down.

Honestly how would you feel?

I would trust you and the school to create a flawless transition plan, to ensure that the children weren't negatively affected.

I think it'll be fine.

Picklesauage · 15/09/2013 20:19

Thank you. Looking at the dates, if all goes well I could work up until 38 weeks and leave the Friday before sats so they wouldn't have a new teacher until the sats were actually over. (I work Thursday and Friday)

I'm not sure there's much you can do!! Hhhmmmm are you dd's teacher?!

I wouldn't worry at all, all the preparation will have been done by then.

Good luck!

Periwinkle007 · 15/09/2013 20:25

you sound like a caring teacher so I am sure it would all work out without any undue stress to the children. Congratulations

coppertop · 15/09/2013 20:29

I have a Yr6 child.

If I found out the teacher was going on maternity leave just before SATs, my only thoughts on the matter would be "Good luck and I hope it all goes well for her".

pointythings · 15/09/2013 20:40

I wouldn't be worried at all. Given the amount of SATs practice many schools do these days I don't think it will make much of a difference who is doing the endless practice with them. What matters far, far more is what you do with the children in the time that you aren't practising for SATs, which is going to be the earlier stages of your pregnancy, and since you are clearly very engaged and caring I don't see how you're going to get that wrong.

Also if you are P/T you and whoever is sharing the job with you will work out a transition, since you must already be incredibly organised.

Saracen · 15/09/2013 21:19

Congratulations on your pregnancy!!

If the kids love you as much as you love them then I am sure as a parent I would be sad to see you go.

However, I would not care at all about the exact timing. I would hope that my kids wouldn't have been under pressure with respect to SATs and therefore it wouldn't make any difference to them exactly when you left.

I living in a grammar school area would be far more concerned about year 5. Having said that when a teacher is pregnant I just assume that the school will ensure that the children have a flawless transition. And over 4 children my fourth noe in year 5 each tine this has happened (5 teachers I can think of) the school has dealt with it so my children were not negatively affected. Many positive reactions though as each teacher has shared their pregnancy and later spoken of their babies

Galena · 16/09/2013 11:24

Congratulations! I'm sure it'll be fine.

Bear in mind babies don't always check your diary.

I was a Y3 teacher. I told my class before Easter that I was expecting a baby (Due mid-July) so it wasn't a shock if I looked pregnant after the Easter holiday. I came back after the holiday for 1 day, then got taken into hospital and then had DD in mid-April. Sso much for a nice calm handover!

becsbornunderadancingstar · 16/09/2013 11:28

I'd think 'How wonderful, congratulations!' Aren't SATs meant to be a test of the school anyway rather than a test of the children?

CinnamonAddict · 16/09/2013 11:39

I wouldn't worry about it. I always found my dc's primary school made too much of an issue of sats. I kept telling my dc it's nothing to get stressed about. So a teacher leaving anytime during year 6 would completely be fine. It's just an exam. What matters is that they are taught well and like their teacher.

Runningchick123 · 16/09/2013 13:14

As you only do two days a week the children will have the stability of the other teacher who does the three days so i don't see any problems even if you decided to start maternity leave earlier.
Congrats on your good news.

kangarooshoes · 16/09/2013 14:16

What're you going to do if the parents don't like it, terminate?!

As a parent, I think SATs are a load of bollocks, so I'd be congratulating you on your pregnancy, and the thought of SATs wouldn't even occur to me.

Seems a great way to broach the "does everyone know where babies come from and how to they grow" talk with year sixes, too.

settledandsmug · 16/09/2013 14:27

As a Y6 parent I would be relieved that you are going to be able to be around for most of the SATs prep.

Please don't feel guilty about such great news and I'm sure your class parents will all be equally pleased for you.

Picklesauage · 16/09/2013 18:01

Thank you all. The year 6's have already done the sex ed. I taught it to them last year, Year 5's. so they already know what I did!! Shock

I think sats are crap from a child point of view, but from a school point of view they are really essential this year. Total crap but necessary.

I just want the children I feel supported, not abandoned.

kangarooshoes · 16/09/2013 19:45

They won't feel abandoned, the world isn't all about them! They'll think Miss has gone to have a baby.

(And "Ewwwwwwww! She did that sex thing with her husband, ewwww!"
