Has anyone else had no work home at all so far this year?

Dd has just gone into y1. Term started last Tuesday and so far we have had nothing at all home from school. No reading books, no homework diaries, nothing. Is this normal or do the school need to pull their fingers out?

I wouldn't worry. I'm sure the school will be settling your lo into the changes in year 1 as it is quite different to Reception. You can do activities with your lo yourself if you are really worried. Make the most it as the homework will probably be on its way!!

SummerSevern · 12/09/2013 11:09

Don't worry about homework at this point. They'll still be getting to know your dc's ability levels before they decide what work to send home.
I'd be chasing up the reading books though.

redskyatnight · 12/09/2013 11:25

It's early still. DD has gone into Y3 (new school) and has had no homework either. Whereas DS at the same school has had homework every night!

pootlebug · 12/09/2013 11:27

Same here and I'm glad they haven't. They're still only 5, just getting used to being back at school after long holidays, and tired after school. She reads stuff at home anyway.

Anyonedotcom · 12/09/2013 11:27

Dd is in yr 4, she had a book and spellings in the first week. She was given homework yesterday.

Periwinkle007 · 12/09/2013 11:33

I wouldn't worry at all - just think that you have more time to relax, get back into routine, read home books etc.

So far in Yr1 (went back wed last week) we have had 1 lot of spellings come home on monday for friday and we have had 4 reading books (she reads them very quickly). Some of the children have read on different days and took a couple more days to get started at the beginning of term so are probably on 2nd reading book. Some children have had some phonics exercises and others have had some maths. I am assuming that these are ones to try and catch the children back up to where they would like them to be from what the parents have said.

Fluffymonster · 12/09/2013 11:34

I wouldn't worry either. They haven't had a full week yet - still settling in. If it bothers you, give something for them to do at home.

DD1 has just gone into Y1 as well, we got thr first reading book back on Monday, homework will be given for the first time tomorrow. We had a newsletter last Friday with all of the information for this term, which said homework will be each Friday due in the following Wednesday. I would be more worried/annoyed at the lack of communication if they haven't yet told you their plans for this kind of thing, rather than at it not having started yet IYSWIM.

afussyphase · 12/09/2013 11:44

Hm, same here - Y1, nothing home and zero communication. Have heard from DD about yellow table and blue table and whatnot, with different tables doing different things, so presumably they are dividing the DC into groups and differentiating. Nothing about reading books.
It doesn't help that we don't collect from school but from an after-school scheme at the attached children's centre so I can't just have a casual chat. Current plan is to wait and see ...
Any advice for getting the communication going without seeming (or being!) over-the-top pushy?

Iamcountingto3 · 12/09/2013 11:49

Wouldn't worry at all - I would expect them to ease the kids in gently, so wouldn't expect anything for the first week or two, they are only little still, and Y1 is a HUGE leap from R - often quite a hard time, ime.

If you want to get into good habits, you can start getting a set reading time established at home with home books...

(dd is in y3 - new school - and hasn't had any reading books or homework yet - all homework is set via online platforms which we haven't had logins for, so I'm not expecting any til next week. Fine by me)

wheredidiputit · 12/09/2013 11:51

Not for dd2 who is in year 1, but I know that they are doing assessments this week so they know what levels the children are at.

Herisson · 12/09/2013 11:53

DD is in Y2 and all we've had home is a reading diary and reading book. I think that's plenty. And I think the promptness is new this year - she didn't get anything for several weeks last year.

Periwinkle007 · 12/09/2013 13:50

I actually would say for Yr1 I would give it until about week 4ish before starting to worry too much. I don't mind if she doesn't bring home any work at all (other than reading books), to me it indicates she is doing the work in school instead. We have had home the topics for the year but no other info yet but I wouldn't expect it so quickly at this age. When they are Yr3 or over then yes I would hope they would hit the ground running a bit more but Yr1 is still only little and there is a lot of school year to go yet.

Yorkieaddict · 12/09/2013 14:30

We've had nothing back yet, apart from a couple of reading books. DS's teacher apparently doesn't even know who he is yet, and keeps mixing him up with another boy who looks similar! I am hoping things will improve as the teacher gets to know them, and everything settles down into a routine. I can't remember how things were at the start of Reception. I suspect it may have been similar. I think I would wait and see how things are in a couple more weeks.

EmeraldJeanie · 12/09/2013 14:39

Relax and let your children have a lovely time settling back into school.
Why the hurry for homework?

Cat98 · 12/09/2013 14:54

Year 1 here too and ds has had nothing. I'm not worried at all - it's still early days, and I know from the snippets of info I get from him that they have been doing some spelling and things .. I think they're busy assessing, and settling the children in.
I was slightly surprised we haven't had a reading book yet, but ds reads at home anyway so not concerned.
Give it time!

Elibean · 12/09/2013 14:57

We didn't have homework straight away in Y1, I'd say this was normal!

In Y2, they've just had their first homework set - quite a lot, compared to last year Sad

Y5 had homework on the first day, to dd's horror Grin

pointythings · 12/09/2013 20:13

DD2 has had a reading book - she's in Yr6. I am expecting homework for the weekend. And that's quite soon enough.

Cat98 · 14/09/2013 16:56

Update, we had a reading book home and a note about homework - saying that it will only be set 'when it is felt appropriate' and that it's to be enjoyed as an extension of classroom topics and free from pressure! I love ds's school :)

ContraryAndHairy · 14/09/2013 21:43

Traditionally, we dontbgercfirbak homework until after half term. Enjoy.
