I think he's going to have to miss the very first day - how terrible actually is this?

Hi there, am stressing. My youngest is due to start school tomorrow. But last night he was up with a high temperature and has had a temperature of 39 all day today despite calpol and ibuprofen...it did come down eventually at about 5pm this evening although he feels hot again now. He was also sick five times this morning. I know he cannot go in tomorrow - apart from anything else their sickness rule is 48 hours after the last bout of sickness...but I am worried about him missing the first day. He is an extremely anxious child and I'm worried he'll miss all the welcome bits and being told what to do. Please could someone tell me it won't be so terrible?!

It won't be terrible, the teacher will be repeating herself for weeks and weeks before the routines sink in for all of them. Hope he feels better soon.

I know it feels bad at the moment but once he does start then within a week it won't matter at all that he started a day or two late. Much better than sending him in when he's not 100%.

It won't matter! Statistically it is just like any other day - a certain proportion of people will be off sick. They will know what to do to help him catch up.

I missed my first day at school, it was fine.

It will be fine, don't worry at all. I cannot articulate it any better but it's nothing at all to worry about.

Thank you...I just feel bad that he will miss that first bit of them all meeting each other etc, and where to put everything. I am a natural worrier which doesn't help. I'm sure this time next week it'll all be fine (I hope!) Thank you for your replies

It won't be terrible - DD had to miss her very first week of school!

I had an urgent operation just before the start of term and was in hospital for a week - DH, I and the HT agreed it would be more settling and beneficial for DD to start when I was out of hospital. She didn't settle in nursery and we all thought it best that she began school when her Mummy wasn't so ill in hospital.

She was due to start a couple of days late, but after I was released from hospital we were then rushed in with DS (3mth old at the time) and he was treated for suspected meningitis!

So, in the end, she started school a week late! But, she has never looked back - she literally ran in with a fleeting "Bye, Mummy!" before disappearing into a sea of children and I then hobbled back to the car sobbing my heart out while DH tried in vain to find some tissues
