I was hoping someone could help. I am looking for a school that has a very strong music and sport department. I have a boy who is 6, I am interested in bursary's and scholarships to go in year 3. My son is good at music and sport for his age but is not very academic. I heard that cranmore is good but very academic and Belmont is not so good but easier for children that struggle academic. Any advice is much appreciated, it can be anywhere in Surrey. We are coming from Cornwall.
Many thanks

Lanesborough? Very strong Music. There is a Choral Scholarship not worth as much as it used to be though (same money just smaller percentage of fees).
I loved Belmont but it is very rural which can be an issue in Winter.
Hoe Bridge is pretty good for Sport.

I'm not sure about any of these for Bursaries etc.
If you really need them then why not look at State schools which are pretty good, and quite a few boys go from them to Private secondaries (eg. RGS).

Daneshill or Ewell Castle ? There are so many but I 'm not sure many offer 7+ scholarships. Do you want single sex or coed ? Whereabouts do you want to live.

Frensham Heights? Very good on creative stuff, won't mind if he's not academic. It's near Farnham.

Kingswood house in Epsom too. However I think you're unlikely to get bursaries for primary school years

Not sure about bursary/scholarship from yr 3, normally bit older from experience. Which bit of Surrey are you looking at as its a big county with lots of private schools.

mummytime how can you suggest Lanesborough for a child that is not very academic? It is one of the most selective prep schools around!

Inclusionist - well the boys I know there and who have gone there are not all academic. You aren't getting it confused with RGS, which a lot of boys from Lanesborough no longer are academic enough to get into? I know a lot of boys from Lanesborough go on to less academic secondaries; and the days of boys going to Eton on scholarships are long gone.
I would have said Cranmore was more academic.

Really? Blimey. My impression of Lanesborough is obviously out of date!

Reigate St Marys? Ticks music, but not sure about sport and might be on the academic side (junior school of Reigate Grammar)

Moominmammacat · 04/09/2013 09:59

Aldro?

mummytime · 04/09/2013 12:46

Well it did used to be much easier to get into RGS.

I second Aldro. It's a bit smaller than the likes of Cranleigh (also good), but the pastoral care and their ability to bring out the very best of their boys is second to none. It's academic for those who need it - scholarships to all the top public schools - but not aggressive and pushy. Sport is very strong, too. What especially impresses me is that, despite that sporty reputation, even the least athletic boys are included and encouraged - they have an inclusion policy that would shame many state schools.
They don't force the boys into a mould, they find what they're good at and nurture it.

Well worth a visit.
