Year 6 SATS results

I have thought about this issue for over a month and would appreciate feedback from others who have, maybe, had the same experience and what, if anything, should be done about it. Basically a school attended by a nephew of mine did not attach the sats results to the end of year reports for parents and, therefore, did not use the template for reporting given to schools by the Department for Education. Instead they read out, in class, all the sats results for each child. My nephew was bright enough to remember his own and those of a good many other children, which were duly reported to my brother. I have never heard of this happening before. When this was queried, the school justified it by saying all the children knew the levels each child was working at anyway as they marked each other's work. I thought exam information was sensitive information and was only shared between schools and parents, unless permission is gained for sharing, where, for example GCSE results are put in the local paper. Not only does my nephew know lots of other children's results, lots of children, and no doubt parents, know his too. The bright children with level 5s and 6s were pleased with their achievements, but would you want your child's results read out to the whole class if you were a level 2 or 3? This seems a shameful, unkind ,and frankly lazy, policy. Any views welcomed. Has this happened in a school you know of and did anyone complain?

I would not be happy with this. My niece just finished year 6 and was very worried about SATs [pushy school]. She would have been mortified if her results had been read out in class.

By law they have to include the results in the annual report of each individual child:

www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2005/1437/made

They must also include the school results of this year and comparative national results (these from 2012).

Absolutely horrified!
I told each child their individual results, but only that. If they then wanted to tell any other child, that was their decision. The results for he school as a whole and national from last year were also included in the reports sent out to parents on the same day.
I would suggest your brother complains to the Head and/or governors.

Thanks for your views. Brother did approach the school and ask for written results which they then coughed up in August when the Head came back from holiday but no comparative results have yet to be given to parents. it seems inconceivable to me that a school would not know how to give these results to parents and then try and justify their methods. Interestingly they initially said that parents could not have the results until they had be passed to the secondary schools! I thought this was done electronically and therefore had nothing to do with filling in the form supplied by the d of e for the specific purpose of informing parents. My brother has two more children in this school so will be watching to see if they amend this in future.

Email them a copy of the legislation, highlight the relevant bits. And if still no joy, report them to the LEA.
