Do Marks & Spencer school shirts come up small or big?

DD is just 7yrs. She is age 7 clothes, but only just. M&S do 5-6yrs or 7-8yrs. DD needs 6-7yrs!! She is skinny, so 7-8 will hang on her, but I am worried 5-6 will be too small? I am buying online, what should I buy? it's the last part of school uniform needed. She has worn polo shirts up to now but needs a shirt/tie this year and I forgot until two weeks ago and everywhere is sold out when I go into store!

dd2 is still wearing age 5-6 in most M&S things, and she is nearly 7. Tall and skinny.

Actually, she is still wearing 4-5 in the shirts!

I would buy one pack of 5-6 and see. You can always switch to 7-8 next term?

In my experience, short and wide (which is officially useless if your children are long and slim). In trousers / skirts I get by on the 'slim' versions of a couple of age groups up, or the 'long' version of a year ahead.

My children can't wear their shirts at all. They either fit reasonably in width but expose a slice of midriff after the slightest movement, or have sifficient extra material in the width for them to take off in a stiff breeze. DS has some decent shirts from BhS, or Sainsbury's cut on a body shape that is small and slim so buying 2 or 3 years older than you usually would gives you a decent size for a tall and slim child.

They come up small. The ones we have only come in one age my DD1 who is 10 wears age 11 and my DD2 who is 8 wears age 9.

Debenhams school clothes are OK for my very skinny dss. They do age 5-6, 6-7, 7-8, 8-9, 9-10 and then, all of a sudden children apparently cease to exist until they reach size-age 11-12, when they suddenly reappear a whole 12cm taller...

M&S come up small, Next and Sainsburys are very good alternatives

PavlovtheCat · 01/09/2013 13:11

teachers I like the sainsburys ones too, but unfortunately they are out of her size (6 or 7) and have been since I started looking, I am calling daily as they suggested (they said they will put it back for me to collect) as they have deliveries daily but so far there has been nothing, or by the time I have called, it's flown out again!

I didn't think of BHS though. I will try there. The reason I want M&S is they will deliver it to store by tomorrow, so if I go in and they have none, at least this way I get some anyway.

Their sizes have always been out. I have a pinafore dress age 7 for her which is very big, and a summer dress aged 6 is far too short for decency now!

rabbit same with debenhams as sainsburys - it is usually my shop of choice as I can get it all online, or pop into the shop in my lunch break as it's across the road (and get to buy myself a few things at the same time Wink) But, they have only had it in stock since yesterday in her size online and wont arrive in time for school, and when I went in last week, none in store. As it happens I can't even pop in today now as I am laid up in bed with back trouble.

I could just send her in with her summer dress as it's likely to be lovely this week weather wise, but, she so desperately wants to wear her tie for the first time ever and I sort of feel I should let her! (the things we do for our children eh?)

Tesco school shirts are good of you have one near, they can deliver them to store but it would probably be Tuesday now, if that helps.

PavlovtheCat · 01/09/2013 13:33

littlemiss we have tescos near enough to get to. I will go take a look thank you! Not back at school until Wednesday so Tuesday would work. I might call the store up and see if they have the right size in stock now and then DH can go get them today.

You would think I am really unorganised (I am!) but, this year, I have had all school stuff, apart from these pesky shirts, sorted at the beginning of the year to avoid mad rush and lack of choice (and some things from last year still fit).

Small, our 12yo boy wears 14 in the fitted shirts and he is a skinny malinky.

Def small. Last year ds (almost 12 starting secondary) had 3 from M & S and 4 from Next all in age 11. The M & S ones were a lot, lot smaller (they're also whiter but more see-through) and don't fit him this year. The Next ones still do.
