What do 'you' do with 'read-aloud' ebooks? Should parents let their children get on with it themselves, when we are told the whole purpose of 'read-aloud' ebooks is for we parents too!

This mum thinks you sound rather smug and patronising.

Actually, at the moment, as an 'old-fashioned' Mum, I'm trying to make some real sense of what is deemed 'progress' in books. Finding myself questioning: 'Are new ways - 'must-have' costly gimmicks and gadgets - progress? In what way do they 'really' benefit our children? Story-time will always be for me snuggled up with a book with the children, sharing together the great adventure.' The 'rea'l Treasure! I love helping out in schools encouraging the joy of reading! As mrz said above, some children never set eyes on a book other than in the classroom. I think I will ponder this question well into the future!

Children don't need gimmicks and gadgets but for some reading on a screen provides more motivation than reading a standard paper book ...for sharing stories with your child there is nothing like good old fashioned paper books IMHO. As a teacher I don't care what my children (pupils) read as long as they do read

I don't read with my children any more, but we do enjoy the same sort of genres so we talk about favourite characters, plots etc a fair bit. When they were small I chose all their books with a lot of care as I am picky on both quality and message (as a feminist it's particularly important to me find books with non stereotyped characters as well as great female leads, plus I hate shmaltzy stuff or anything that is too busy shoving it's message down your throat). I also think it's very important to read books aloud to children, and some books are written really badly for that.

I don't know what sort of thing yo have in mind when you talk about interactive ebooks, but if it's anything like the old leappad 'talk along' books I personally think they are utterly shit. Reading should (in general) be about opening your imagination.
