he had a lovely time in year R though i am aware that year 1 is a lot different. just how much different though? will they have homework?

he is moving to a class with a teacher who has a reputation for being strict, have told him it will be fine but actually im a bit worried about him leaving his cosy reception class and lovely teacher.

DD found Year 1 ok but the Rception teacher already increased the time of teacher-led Learning during the last half of Summer term a lot so the "shock" wasn't too much.

Some children didn't like the new teaching approach but by autum half term all had adjusted.

We already had weekend homework during Reception so no change there, just a increase as we got additional maths homework.

DS3 found the transition quite tough going but his teacher did say she'd set expectations high, within a few weeks he had adapted well to the new routine and expectations and now can't wait for school to start again as he is raring to go as a year 2 (in the same class with the same teacher as it's a small school)

I'm not doing much to prepare my ds for year 1. He had quite a strict teacher for Reception but was happy enough with a good group or friends so I'm trying not to think too much about it. I'm assuming the Reception teacher prepared them a bit for the work loads and that the year 1 teacher will ease them in slowly enough.

We've been given a list of words to practice from the year 1 reading list and have done a bit of a maths workbook once or twice.

DD is also going into yr1 and I am not doing much to prepare her either Blush

She is ready for more formal learning so I don't envisage a problem but her best friend has left the school (moved away in the summer holiday) so she is a bit worried about that.

I do know that for the first couple of weeks they will be working in the morning and playing in the afternoon so that the kids aren't in for a huge shock Grin

Thank you for the replies. I've not done anything to prepare him either. I do worry about everything as he is being split from his friendship group going into year one, so he has two adjustments to deal with and he is not fantastic with change and we've had an upheaval at home this summer too.

We've not been given any work to do over the summer, we have been going to the library and that's about it. Definitely needs to get back to school as his behaviour has taken turn for worse despite us trying rewards, ignoring, sanctions, extra cuddles etc. But like I say there has been a lot going on.

Hoping they transition them slowly. Your schools sound really good!
