AM I the only one not buying new uniform?

Everyone I know is buying new uniform and shoes "Because it's a new year" even though their children have some uniform that is fine from last year. DS3 had new shoes and trousers at easter and his polos and sweatshirts from last year still fit fine - if he outgrows them during the year (which I fully expect him to do) I will buy new then, but don't see the need for new stuff just because he's had six weeks off school. I'd rather spend that money doing fun stuff over the summer.

It's ds's first year of school, so not much choice! Did find some shorts at a car boot, though. So far have always bought him shoes in Sept as he wears sandals all summer and his feet have grown three months later.

I didn't buy anything new! All their uniform & PE kit still fits, plus they both have a perfectly good pencilcase...DS begged for a new one but I told him he can pay for it with his pocket money!

My sister, however, is the complete opposite. She spends up to £200 on back-to-school crap...everything, & I mean everything has to be brand new, for her "precious prince". She said to me the other da, after Id offered him my son's outgrown football boots - "ooh no no, he couldnt wear those, he needs new...hes getting to be a handsome young man & i dont want the girls teasing him."

What.the.fuck? Hmm

The only thing I haven't bought new is the cardys, because I bought them much bigger last sept! I couldn't do that with dresses etc (without looking silly) so have had to replace as they are too short. My dds have easily grown 2 inches since last sept and i really hate dresses and skirts above the knee. Not too bad though as dd2 gets dd1s dresses so only really buying one set.

Polo tops generally don't last more than the 6 months I find. Pe kits I can get 2 years out of. Shoes get replaced twice per year.

Nope, DS1 has new shoes because he seems to have gone up a size and a half since the last pair Shock but I'm hoping he will still fit his trousers and he'll definitely fit the shorts that I assume he's going to start the term by wearing. Sweatshirts are all different sizes because I keep on buying old ones from the 2nd hand uniform sale. Grin (he prefers the older style and so do I - they wash better and pre-used ones have nicely enlarged neckholes for his rather large head.) I haven't actually managed to get him into his gear yet but will do it tomorrow, so if he does seem to have grown out of anything, I can still get to Sainsbury or M&S before term starts Wednesday week.

I sort of assumed that going into school all stiff in the entirely new uniform was just one of those cute Reception things, and that very few children returning will be kitted out in new things. Grin

Ds's have new polo shirts (from Tesco so didn't exactly break the bank!).

That's it. Everything else still fits and doesn't have any holes so is fine for going back to school in.

I'm pretty sure that I'll be buying new shoes and some trousers (they'll be going back in shorts) sometime before Christmas.

ReadytoOrderSir · 26/08/2013 10:58

Shoes and trousers only here, because there were outgrown. DD will need new polos before Christmas, but they can wait for now. Everything else is fine :-)

Solo · 26/08/2013 11:02

No, I think everything still fits. Except for Ds's blazer and shoes.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 26/08/2013 11:03

I'm not.

At 21 and 23 they can buy their own (if they need it)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 26/08/2013 11:07

I check mine in June when M&S sale is on and buy next sizes up of anything that is getting small, then label it up over the summer and do another try on of old stuff about now - anything that still fits/isn't trashed stays in use, new stuff that isn't needed yet is kept put away till it is. New shoes every summer though, my two have never outgrown or trashed a pair within the school year.

Calabria · 26/08/2013 11:16

Not the only one. I've bought:
a new swimming costume - because the old one was indecently see through
a new swimming hat as her hair is very long and the old one won't stay on
new shoes and trainers as the old ones are too small and worn out
a new bag as the old one was full of holes
a skort for sport at her request as she gets too hot in her track suit

Tried on everything else today and, much to my relief, it all still fits. Her uniform is very expensive but very hard wearing.

Nagoo · 26/08/2013 11:22

DS's uniform was trashed. The trousers had holes in the hems, the shoes didn't fit and all the tops were deformed from washing or covered in whiteboard pen..

SummerRain · 26/08/2013 11:28

I bought jumpers for the older two as last year's were wrecked. Ds2 had enough handed down from ds1 so only needed shoes. And I picked up pants for ds1 as he goes through them fairly quickly and they're hard to buy in winter (he'll only wear one specific type of track pants from dunnes and they don't sell uniform between October and March)

Other than that I didn't need anything.

LaBelleDameSansPatience · 26/08/2013 20:44

Nothing new at all. And all uniform was second hand from the PTA in the first place. Total outlay on uniform so far .... £10? At most. (Shoes handed down from friend.)

littleducks · 26/08/2013 20:53

I buy quite a bit new in the holidays for September, its easier as I'm off work as kids are off school and every shop has it in stock. Trying to find school trousers that fit the exact criteria in February when no where has them in stock and nobody will be at home to accept parcels from online deliveries is a PITA.

I pass stuff down too so would rather replace it slightly too small but in good condition than wait for it to be far too small and not fit to pass down.

mam29 · 26/08/2013 22:17

PeanutButterOnly · 26/08/2013 22:33

It does make me review what uniform is in the wardrobe, whether it fits and whether it's very scruffy. The rest of the year I don't notice whether it's worn out. I think it's the 6 week break - there's nothing else school wise to think so attention turns to the uniform. I did get rid of a few age 5 items from DS wardrobe (he's 9).
